Chapter 5: A Father’s Vow

Outside the room, Julian called the country’s top cardiologists, sparing no expense to fly in specialists overnight. For years, Julian had used his wealth as a shield against grief, but tonight, he realized its true purpose: to protect his family.

He sat on the hospital couch next to Arthur, who was clutching a paper cup of warm hot chocolate. ""Your mom is going to get the best care in the world, Arthur. I promise you that,"" Julian said, looking into the boy’s eyes.

Arthur looked down at his scuffed sneakers. ""Are you going to stay? Or will you leave again when she gets better?"" The question pierced Julian’s heart. He knelt down in front of Arthur, bringing himself to eye level. ""I didn't leave because I wanted to, son. I thought I lost you both. I’m never walking away again.""
