Chapter 8: The Descent from the Ivory Tower

The grand staircase of the Sterling estate was a monument to wealth and pretension, featuring sweeping mahogany banisters and imported Persian runners. As Arthur descended toward the foyer, the chaotic scene below unfolded like a dark theatrical tragedy.
Four burly men in plain black tactical gear stood forming a protective perimeter around the base of the stairs. In the center stood Eleanor. Her white silk bathrobe was now stained with dark smudges of perfume and dirt, her dark hair tangled and wild around her face, her eyes blazing with a mixture of hysterical rage and absolute disbelief.
""Get your hands off me, you rented thugs!"" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing violently as two female medical attendants tried to gently secure her arms in a soft medical restraint jacket. ""Do you know who I am? My husband is Arthur Sterling! He owns half the financial district! When he sees this, he’ll have every single one of you thrown in a hole and forgotten!""
""He’s the one who signed the order, Mrs. Sterling,"" the lead medical officer said calmly, his voice devoid of any emotion as he held up the court-stamped document.
Eleanor froze. Her manic screaming cut off mid-syllable, her jaw dropping open as her bloodshot eyes locked onto the top of the staircase. There stood Arthur, descending slowly, his posture rigid, his face carved from impenetrable granite.
""Arthur,"" she whispered, her voice cracking with a pathetic, syrupy desperation that made his stomach turn. She surged forward, but the attendants held her back firmly. ""Arthur, please. It was a mistake. The girl... she provoked me, you know how difficult she is, she’s disturbed! We can get help, we can go to therapy, we don't need to do this! Think of our vows!""
Arthur stopped three steps from the bottom, looking down at the woman he had married with a clinical, detached curiosity, wondering how he had ever mistaken her toxic narcissism for sophistication.
""Our vows included a promise to protect the innocent, Eleanor,"" Arthur said, his voice carrying clearly across the cavernous marble foyer. ""You broke that promise the moment you picked up that lighter. You broke it every single time you looked at our daughter as an inconvenience rather than a blessing.""
""You're framing me!"" she shrieked, the mask of sanity shattering completely into jagged, violent pieces. Saliva flew from her lips as she thrashed against the restraints, her beautiful face twisting into a demonic snarl. ""You want my art collection! You want my shares! You selfish, cold-hearted bastard, I hope she rots! I hope she burns just like—""
May you like
She abruptly bit her tongue, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she realized what she had almost screamed out.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed instantly, his body going deathly still. ""Just like what, Eleanor?"" he demanded, taking a sharp step down. ""Finish the sentence.""
