Chapter 7: Dawn of Reckoning

The first gray light of dawn crept through the tall gothic windows of the estate, bringing with it no warmth, only the stark, uncompromising reality of a new day. Arthur sat upright in the velvet armchair, his suit jacket draped over the back, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He had not slept a wink. His mind had spent the night constructing an impenetrable legal and tactical fortress to protect his daughter and dismantle Eleanor’s life piece by meticulous piece.
A discreet chime from his encrypted smartphone broke the morning silence. Arthur picked it up immediately. It was a message from his lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance: *All preliminary injunctions filed. Judge’s emergency signature secured. Private psychiatric transport team is waiting at the south gates. We can execute whenever you give the word, Arthur.*
Arthur typed a single, decisive word back: *Now.*
He stood up, shaking off the physical stiffness of the night, and walked over to the bed. Lily was stirring, her eyelids fluttering open to reveal confused, sleepy eyes that quickly widened with residual fear as she took in her surroundings.
""Morning, sweetheart,"" Arthur said, forcing a warm, gentle smile onto his face as he sat on the edge of the mattress. ""How is the arm?""
Lily looked down at the white bandage, wiggling her fingers cautiously. ""It still stings, Papa. But... it doesn't feel like fire anymore.""
""Good. Because today, we are going on a little trip. Just you, me, and Clara,"" Arthur said, smoothing back her long blonde hair with immense tenderness. ""We’re going to a quiet house by the coast. No alarms, no shouting, just the ocean and the two of us. Would you like that?""
Lily’s face lit up with a tentative, hopeful smile for the first time in as long as Arthur could remember. ""Can we bring my favorite stuffed rabbit?""
May you like
""We can bring every toy you own,"" Arthur promised, kissing her forehead.
A heavy thud echoed from the hallway outside the west wing, followed by muffled shouts and the sound of heavy boots. Arthur’s jaw tightened. The extraction had begun. He stepped out into the corridor, closing Lily’s door firmly behind him to shield her from the ugly spectacle, and walked toward the grand staircase to meet his wife for the very last time.
