Chapter 4: The Anatomy of a Monster

Standing up from the cold floor, Arthur’s towering frame seemed to cast a suffocating pall over the entire room. He turned slowly to face his wife, the man who had loved her, provided for her, and shielded her from the public eye for nearly a decade. But as he looked at Eleanor now, he realized he was staring at a total stranger—a creature wearing the expensive skin of a society wife to mask a hollow, sadistic core.

Eleanor shrank back half a step, the manic fury in her eyes flickering briefly with genuine terror as she met her husband’s gaze. ""What... what are you looking at like that?"" she stammered, her voice losing its previous theatrical resonance and dropping into an unnatural, defensive whine. ""You believe them over your own wife? After everything I’ve sacrificed for this family? The parties, the social standing, keeping up appearances while you were buried in your goddamn office?""

""Appearances,"" Arthur repeated, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his black leather shoes clicking menacingly against the marble. ""Is that what you call torturing a six-year-old child? Keeping up appearances?""

""She dropped her teacup!"" Eleanor shrieked, the mask completely slipping for a fraction of a second, revealing the festering ugliness beneath. ""She’s clumsy, she’s ungrateful, she ruins everything! Just like her mother, just like this whole damned house!"" She caught herself immediately, slapping a trembling hand over her mouth, her eyes darting nervously as she realized what she had confessed.

Clara gasped softly, pulling Lily even closer into her chest and murmuring a quiet prayer.

Arthur stopped just inches from Eleanor. He didn't tower over her with physical aggression; his menace was far colder, far more absolute. His eyes, usually warm and expressive, were now flat, dark windows reflecting a profound, icy void. ""You are done here, Eleanor,"" he said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet and dangerous that it made the very air in the room feel brittle. ""You will never touch our daughter again. You will never set foot in this house unsupervised. By morning, my lawyers will have the divorce papers drafted, the restraining orders filed, and your psychiatric evaluation scheduled.""

""You can't do that!"" Eleanor screamed, lunging forward with a renewed burst of frantic energy, her fists hammering uselessly against his chest. ""I’m an art collector! I’m a Sterling! You’ll ruin me! The scandal—think of the company, Arthur, think of the stock prices!""

""I am thinking of my daughter,"" Arthur whispered fiercely, catching her wrists in an iron grip that made her wince. He shoved her back, sending her stumbling against the marble vanity. Without another word, he turned his back on her, scooped the red cigarette lighter off the floor with a handkerchief, and motioned for Clara to bring Lily out of the room.
