Chapter 3: Kneeling in the Ashes

The heavy silence of the bathroom was broken only by Lily’s ragged breathing and the faint, rhythmic sound of Clara murmuring soothing, maternal comforts in a low, grounding tone. Arthur dropped to his knees on the cold marble floor, completely unconcerned about the immaculate creases of his bespoke trousers. His large, steady hands hovered hesitantly over Lily’s arm, terrified that even the slightest touch of air would cause the little girl more agony.

""Let me see, my sweet girl,"" Arthur whispered, his voice cracking violently on the final syllable. The professional detachment that made him a feared corporate negotiator had completely evaporated, stripped away by the raw, bleeding reality of his daughter’s pain. He gently supported Lily’s tiny wrist, his eyes burning with unshed tears as he inspected the crescent-shaped burn marring the soft skin of her forearm. The edges of the wound were charred and white, surrounded by a furious, weeping ring of crimson.

Clara positioned her body to shield Lily’s line of sight, her weathered face etched with lines of deep empathy and fierce protective loyalty. ""She didn't mean it, Mr. Arthur,"" Clara said softly, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. ""The little one was only trying to reach her favorite doll. Mrs. Sterling... she just lost her temper. Again.""

The word hung in the air, heavy and poisonous. *Again.*

Arthur’s head snapped up, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. ""Again?"" The word was barely a breath, escaping his lips like escaping steam from a boiling kettle. He looked from Clara to Lily, whose tear-stained blue eyes looked up at him with a heartbreaking mixture of terror and absolute, unconditional trust. In that single, agonizing glance, years of subtle excuses, misplaced trust, and blind domestic ignorance shattered into dust. He remembered the unexplained bruises he had dismissed as clumsy playground tumbles, the sudden, uncharacteristic flinches whenever Eleanor raised her voice, the quiet nights when Lily cried in her sleep.

Behind them, Eleanor’s frantic breathing hitched. ""Arthur, don't listen to that insolent woman! The help is conspiring against me! She’s always hated our lifestyle, she’s turning our daughter into a liar!"" Eleanor’s voice was climbing rapidly into a shrill, hysterical pitch, her manicured nails digging into her own scalp as she paced behind them like a caged animal.

Arthur ignored her entirely. He carefully unbuttoned the cuff of his own shirt, tore a clean strip of fabric from the lining, and gently, oh so gently, wrapped it around Lily’s burning arm. His heart felt as though it were being slowly crushed in a vice.
