Chapter 6: The Confession in the Dark

The clock on the mantelpiece ticked away the midnight hours with monotonous precision. Outside the window, a heavy autumn rain began to lash against the glass, washing away the remnants of a suffocating evening. Inside the west wing, the only light came from the warm, amber glow of the bedside lamp. Lily had finally drifted into an exhausted, fitful sleep, her small chest rising and falling in shallow rhythms, her uninjured hand still tightly clutching Arthur’s index finger.
Arthur hadn't moved for hours. His mind raced through a horrifying retrospective of the past three years. The sudden mood swings, the exorbitant bills for ""medical treatments"" that Eleanor claimed were for chronic fatigue, the sudden dismissal of three different nannies before Clara arrived—each one having threatened to speak out before Eleanor intimidated them into silence with legal threats and social ruin. He had been a willing fool, too arrogant to believe that the woman bearing his name could harbor such a vicious, malignant streak.
A soft, hesitant knock broke the silence. The door creaked open an inch, and Clara’s face appeared in the gap. She motioned quietly for him to step outside into the hallway.
Gently untangling his finger from Lily’s grip, Arthur stood up, stretching his stiff joints, and tiptoed out of the room, pulling the door almost entirely shut behind him.
""What is it, Clara?"" Arthur whispered in the dim corridor.
""She’s quiet now,"" Clara reported, keeping her voice low. ""She tried to break out of the master suite about an hour ago, screaming about her designer coats and threatening to call the police on us both. When she realized the smart-locks had been overridden from your master console, she started smashing perfume bottles against the bathroom mirror. I’ve cut the power to that wing to keep her from hurting herself further.""
Arthur rubbed his temples, a dull, throbbing migraine blooming behind his eyes. ""Good. Let her break things. She won't be breaking anything else of mine—or anyone else's—ever again."" He paused, looking directly into Clara’s weary, lined face. ""Clara, I need to know the truth. How long has this been going on? Why didn't you come to me sooner?""
Clara looked down at her hands, folding them neatly over her grey uniform apron. A shadow of profound guilt crossed her features. ""I wanted to, Mr. Arthur. God knows I tried. But Mrs. Sterling... she is a very persuasive woman. She threatened to fire me without references, to accuse me of theft, to ensure I would never work in this city again. And... and whenever I hinted that the little one was unhappy, you were always rushing off to New York, or Frankfurt, or Tokyo. You always looked so tired, so stressed. I didn't think you had the emotional room to carry another burden.""

Arthur closed his eyes, a sharp pang of remorse stabbing through his chest. *I was too busy building an empire of glass,* he thought bitterly. *While the foundation of my own home was rotting away.*
""That ends tonight,"" Arthur vowed, his voice steady and cold. ""You have my absolute protection, Clara. From this moment on, you are not just a nanny; you are head of household security and Lily’s primary guardian. Whatever you need, whatever resources, whatever staff—name it, and it’s yours.""
