Chapter 10: The Healing Coast

Three weeks later, the Sterling estate in the city was a ghost town, preserved like a crime scene under the watchful eye of private security, while Arthur, Lily, and Clara had relocated to a secluded, rambling beach house on the rugged cliffs of the Oregon coast. Here, the endless roar of the Pacific Ocean and the salty sea air acted as a natural balm for Lily’s shattered nerves.

The physical burn on Lily’s arm was healing into a faint, silvery line, but the psychological scars required far more delicate care. Every afternoon, Arthur sat with Lily on the weathered wooden deck, helping her build elaborate castles out of driftwood and wet sand. He had completely stepped away from day-to-day operations at Sterling Enterprises, handing the reins to a trusted board of directors while he dedicated every waking hour to rediscovering what it meant to be a father.

""Papa, look! A seagull!"" Lily pointed excitedly toward the gray horizon, a genuine, unforced giggle bubbling up from her throat.

Arthur smiled, a deep, genuine warmth spreading through his chest. Seeing her laugh like that felt like watching a miraculous sunrise after an endless, freezing night. ""I see it, my love. It looks like it’s racing the clouds.""

Clara walked out onto the deck carrying a tray of warm apple cider and fresh blankets, her face creased with a gentle, approving smile as she watched father and daughter interact. ""She’s eating all her vegetables, Mr. Arthur. And she slept twelve hours straight through the night without a single bad dream.""

""Thank you, Clara,"" Arthur said, taking a mug of cider from her hands. ""I don't know where we would be without you.""

""You would have figured it out eventually, sir,"" Clara replied sagely, pulling her wool cardigan tighter against the brisk ocean wind. ""Love has a way of waking us up, no matter how deep the sleep.""

Before Arthur could respond, his phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a routine update from his estate manager. Instead, the caller ID displayed Marcus Vance’s private office line. Arthur’s expression shifted instantly, the relaxed warmth evaporating from his features as a cold, professional edge returned.

""Marcus,"" Arthur answered, standing up and walking to the far corner of the deck out of Lily’s earshot. ""Tell me you found something.""

""I found everything, Arthur,"" Marcus’s voice was grim, laced with a heavy hesitation that made Arthur’s blood run cold. ""You need to sit down.""
