Chapter 5: Sanctuary in the West Wing

The west wing of the estate was a labyrinth of quiet hallways, muted pastel walls, and soft carpets that muffled the outside world. Here, far away from the sterile, cruel marble of the master bathroom, the air smelled of lavender and chamomile. Clara gently placed Lily down on the plush white duvet of the guest bed, her experienced hands moving with tender efficiency as she retrieved a first-aid kit from the mahogany cabinet.

Arthur stood awkwardly in the doorway, his broad shoulders filling the entrance, his sharp black suit looking entirely out of place in the comforting, child-friendly sanctuary. He felt utterly helpless. A man who could dismantle hostile corporate takeovers with a single phone call stood paralyzed by the sight of a little girl wincing as cool antiseptic touched her skin.

""Is it going to hurt, Papa?"" Lily’s voice was small, barely audible above the hum of the bedside nightlight shaped like a sleepy bear.

Arthur swallowed the heavy lump in his throat, crossing the room in two long strides to drop to his knees beside the bed once again. He took Lily’s uninjured hand, pressing his lips gently against her tiny knuckles. ""Not anymore, angel. Papa promises you, not anymore."" He looked up at Clara, who was applying a sterile, medicated bandage over the burn with practiced care. ""Will she... will it scar?""

Clara looked gravely from Arthur to the child, her expression softening with sorrow. ""The physical mark might fade a little with time, Mr. Arthur. But the memory... children remember these things deep in their bones. It will take a lot of love, and a lot of safety, to heal what’s broken inside.""

Arthur nodded slowly, the weight of his past negligence pressing down on him like a lead weight. For years, he had buried himself in work, convincing himself that providing financial security was the ultimate expression of fatherhood. He had left Eleanor alone with Lily for hours, days, weeks at a time, blind to the slow-burning psychological terror unfolding behind closed doors. He had traded his family’s safety for a corner office and a higher dividend yield.

""I'm staying right here,"" Arthur said, his voice leaving no room for argument. He pulled a velvet armchair directly beside the bedside, sitting down and resting his elbows on his knees, his eyes fixed on Lily’s face. ""Clara, please go downstairs. Make sure she doesn't leave her room. I’ve locked the exterior doors, but I want eyes on her until the security detail arrives.""

""Yes, Mr. Arthur,"" Clara replied, giving his shoulder a firm, supportive squeeze before quietly slipping out of the room and clicking the heavy oak door shut.
