Chapter 9 - Ascent into the Storm

The hike up the rugged mountain trail was a grueling test of endurance. The rain had turned to sleet, freezing against their jackets and coating the pine needles in a treacherous layer of slick ice. Leo carried Toby on his back, the toddler wrapped securely in a heavy military-grade poncho, sleeping through the bitter cold with the exhausted resilience of youth.

Elena walked directly beside Leo, her hand locked tightly in his, while Clara kept a few paces ahead, her eyes constantly scanning the dark tree line with a compact thermal monocular. Vance trudged sullenly behind them, his hands bound loosely with heavy-duty zip-ties, supervised closely by the watchful barrel of Leo’s sidearm.

"How much further?" Elena asked, her breath pluming in white clouds against the freezing night air.

"About a mile past the ridge line," Clara whispered back without turning around. "The relay station is disguised as an automated weather observation post. Nobody goes up there except maintenance crews once a month, which means the security system is automated rather than guarded by live personnel."

"Automated security is worse," Vance muttered from the rear. "Turret defenses tied to motion sensors don't negotiate, and they don't care about biometric clearance codes if you approach from the wrong angle."

Leo stopped in his tracks, pulling Elena behind a massive boulder. He turned his fierce gaze onto Vance. "Why didn't you mention automated turrets before we started climbing?"

"Because I wanted you to walk right into them," Vance replied with a grim, defiant grin. "Do you honestly think I'm going to help you destroy the only system that pays my pension and keeps my family safe from the people you're trying to expose?"

Before Leo could react, a sharp, mechanical whine hummed through the freezing air above them, followed by the terrifying clicking sound of heavy-caliber targeting servos locking onto their position from the top of the ridge.
