Chapter 14 - Into the Depths

The stairs leading down into the auxiliary server room were slick with condensation, the air growing noticeably colder and thinner with every step. The low, ominous hiss of pressurized nitrogen valves echoed through the concrete stairwell like the breathing of a mechanical beast.

Leo descended into the gloom, his lungs burning as the oxygen content plummeted. He reached the bottom landing, stepping into a massive chamber lined with towering rows of glowing server racks that hummed with a frantic, pulsing energy.

On the central pillar, a flashing amber light warned of the active gas purge, casting an eerie, warning glow across the concrete floor.

THIRTY SECONDS TO DATA PURGE.

Leo squinted through the rapidly thickening fog of nitrogen vapor hugging the floor, scanning the maze of cables for rack four. His vision began to blur slightly at the edges, a heavy dizziness creeping into the back of his skull as the breathable air grew scarce.

There it was. Rack four.

He stumbled forward, his boots sliding against the damp concrete, and threw his weight against the heavy server housing. A tangled web of fiber-optic cables glowed softly beneath protective plastic sheathing.

He found the thick blue master cable pulsing with data traffic.

FIFTEEN SECONDS TO DATA PURGE.

Leo gripped the insulated pliers, locked the jaws around the base of the connector, and pulled with every ounce of remaining strength in his body. The plastic housing resisted fiercely before snapping with a loud, satisfying crack, severing the connection entirely.

Instantly, the flashing amber warning lights in the room turned a solid, brilliant green. The terrifying hum of the purge system died away into absolute silence.

Leo sank to his knees, gasping desperately for fresh oxygen as his vision slowly cleared. He had done it. The data was safe.

Back upstairs in the main control room, Clara watched the main monitor flash a triumphant notification: UPLOAD COMPLETE. GLOBAL BROADCAST SUCCESSFUL.

Elena let out a ragged, sobbing breath of pure relief, hugging Toby tightly against her chest as the heavy steel door at the top of the stairs creaked open, and Leo emerged from the depths, battered, exhausted, but alive.
