Chapter 8 - Unlikely Alliance

The revelation hung heavy in the damp mountain air, heavier even than the impending threat of the tactical team Vance had mentioned. Leo lowered his pistol by a fraction of an inch, his eyes darting between Vance and Clara, trying to calculate the variables in an equation where every single variable was a proven liar.
"If you're internal affairs, Clara, why didn't you arrest us at the diner?" Leo asked, his voice laced with bitter exhaustion.
"Because arresting you means handing you over to the custody chain," Clara replied, stepping right into arm's reach and pushing the barrel of Leo’s gun gently aside with two fingers. "And the custody chain belongs entirely to the director who framed you. If you went into the system, you and your family would be dead before dawn."
Elena clutched Toby tighter, rocking the toddler gently as she looked at Clara with cautious hope. "Then what do you propose we do? We can't stay here, and we can't outrun a network that controls the sat-com feeds."
Clara pulled a small, encrypted data drive from her apron pocket and held it up in the amber porch light.
"We don't run," Clara said, a dangerous edge creeping into her voice. "We go on the offensive. This drive contains the financial ledgers linking the director directly to the syndicate operations. If we upload it to the public broadcast grid from the regional relay station three miles up the ridge, the entire conspiracy collapses instantly."
Vance grunted, struggling slightly against Leo’s grip until Leo finally released him and shoved him back toward the gravel path. Vance rubbed the back of his neck, glaring at Clara with undisguised hatred.
"You'll never make it to the relay station," Vance spat, dusting off his soaked trench coat. "The access codes require biometric verification from three separate senior officers. Only the director and two others have clearance."
Clara smiled faintly, a cold, confident expression that didn't reach her eyes.

"That's why we're bringing you along, Vance," Clara said. "You're going to use your thumbprint to open the gate."
