Chapter 15 - The Morning After

The morning sun broke over the snow-capped peaks of the Pacific Northwest, casting a brilliant, golden light across the pine forest and the silent relay station bunker. The storm had passed, leaving behind a pristine, quiet world washed clean of the violence and shadows that had hunted them through the night.

Inside the bunker, the monitors displayed rolling news broadcasts from every major network in the country. Headlines flashed across the screens detailing the immediate resignation and arrest of the federal director, alongside the sweeping exposure of the syndicate's underground network.

Vance sat quietly on the bench near the door, his hands uncuffed, waiting for the extraction team Clara had called to pick him up and process his cooperation for federal witness protection. He looked tired, but for the first time all evening, his expression was entirely at peace.

Elena stood by the window, the morning light catching her hair as she held Toby in her arms. The toddler was completely awake now, his curly brown hair brushed back, drinking peacefully from a small glass of milk Clara had managed to scavenge from the station's emergency supplies.

Leo walked up behind Elena, wrapping his arms gently around both of them, resting his tattooed hands securely against her waist. The heavy burden that had weighed on his chest for months finally lifted, replaced by the quiet warmth of a future they had fought desperately to reclaim.

Clara stood near the console, packing her equipment into a worn leather satchel. She adjusted her white button-down shirt, slipping her black apron off and folding it neatly onto the desk.

"Where will you go now, Clara?" Elena asked softly, turning her head to look at the young woman who had saved their lives.

Clara paused at the door, offering a faint, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the very first time.

"There are always more ghosts out there, Elena," Clara said quietly. "And someone has to help pick up the broken glass."

With that, Clara stepped out into the bright morning air, closing the heavy door behind her as Leo, Elena, and Toby stepped out together into the sunlight, finally ready to begin their new lives.
