Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The air inside the dim restaurant hung thick with tension, smelling faintly of spilled milk and stale espresso. Leo stood over the scattered shards of the heavy glass, his knuckles whitening against his thighs as he stared down at his two-year-old son, Toby. The boy’s face was smeared with tears, curly brown hair matted to his forehead, clutching a fresh glass of milk in his small, trembling hands.

Clara, the young waitress with her dark hair pinned into a high bun, knelt beside the child. She ignored Leo entirely, her voice dropping to a low, soothing cadence.

"Hey, it's too loud, isn't it? Nobody's angry with you," Clara whispered, her eyes remaining soft and steady.

Leo’s jaw tightened, the intricate black ink sprawling across his hands flexing as he clenched his fists. He took a heavy step forward, his voice cutting through the quiet restaurant like a razor.

"Step away from him, Clara," Leo said, his tone low and dangerous. "He needs to learn. You're coddling him, and it's making him weak."

Clara did not flinch. She slowly rose to her feet, holding the now-slumbering toddler securely against her white button-down shirt. Her expression hardened as she looked straight into Leo’s dark, brooding eyes.

"How did you do that?" Leo asked, his voice cracking slightly despite his best efforts to maintain control.

Clara looked back at him with an unwavering, serious gaze.

"I didn't fix him," Clara said, her voice steady and sharp. "He isn't misbehaving, he's grieving. He doesn't need discipline, he needs his mom."

Leo stepped back as if struck, the words opening a wound he had tried desperately to cauterize all evening. Before he could form a reply, the heavy iron front door of the restaurant swung open on its hinges, and a man in a rain-soaked trench coat stepped inside, fixing his cold eyes directly on Leo.
