Chapter 6 - Perimeter Breach

The sound hung in the damp air like a falling blade. Leo instinctively dropped into a defensive crouch, pulling Elena down behind the sturdy oak pillars of the porch. His hand reached once more for the concealed weapon inside his suit jacket, his thumb checking the safety with practiced, mechanical precision.
"Stay inside," Leo ordered, his voice commanding and completely devoid of fear. "If I don't come back in ten minutes, take Toby through the root cellar."
"No, Leo, you don't understand," Elena pleaded, grabbing his wrist with fingers that felt ice-cold against his skin. "They didn't just track your car. They tracked the signature on the milk glass you left on the counter. It has a micro-tracer embedded in the rim."
Leo stared down at her, the pieces clicking together with sickening clarity. Clara hadn't just been a sympathetic waitress; she had been monitoring them from the second they walked through the diner doors. Or perhaps, Clara was working for a completely different faction altogether.
From the treeline, a beam of a high-intensity flashlight sliced through the darkness, painting the mossy ground in a blinding white glare.
"We see you in the light, Leo," Vance’s amplified voice echoed through the trees, carrying a cruel, mocking amusement. "Drop the weapon and walk out with your hands behind your head. Save the boy the trauma of watching another parent get dragged into the dirt."
Elena covered her mouth with both hands to stifle a sob, her eyes wide with terror as the flashlight beam crept closer to the wooden steps of the porch.
Leo didn't hesitate. Instead of stepping out into the light, he rolled off the opposite side of the porch into the dense brush, blending seamlessly into the shadows of the ferns. He moved with silent, predator-like precision, utilizing every ounce of his tactical training to flank the man holding the light.
As Vance stepped up onto the lower step of the porch, aiming his weapon directly at the open cabin door where Elena sat frozen, Leo emerged directly behind him, pressing the cold steel barrel of his pistol firmly against the back of Vance’s neck.

"Drop it, Vance," Leo whispered, his voice like grinding stones. "Or you won't live to collect your bounty."
