Chapter 9

Julian and Maya didn't waste another second. They descended the grand staircase together, moving with urgent purpose toward the front exit. Julian’s mind raced as he unlocked his sedan, tossing his beige suit jacket onto the backseat and sliding behind the wheel. Maya slipped into the passenger seat, immediately plugging her phone into the dashboard navigation system to trace the coordinates of the remote northern cabin.
"She has at least a thirty-minute head start," Maya warned, her fingers flying across her phone screen as she pulled up regional satellite maps. "The cabin is isolated, located deep inside the state park boundaries where cell reception drops to zero. If she gets there first, she will burn it to the ground. Every ledger, every bank statement, every victim’s name from her original Chicago scam is locked inside the basement safe of that cabin."
Julian slammed his foot on the accelerator, the powerful sedan surging down the suburban driveway and merging onto the interstate heading north. The morning traffic thinned out as they left the metropolitan sprawl behind, replaced by dense pine forests and gray asphalt stretching endlessly toward the horizon. Julian gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white, his thoughts fixed entirely on Isabella back at the hotel and the dangerous game they were playing against a ruthless sociopath.
"Why didn't you go to the police with all this evidence years ago, Maya?" Julian asked, keeping his eyes fixed on the road while navigating around a slow-moving transport truck.
Maya sighed, leaning her head against the passenger window as she watched the blur of trees rush past. "Because Elena is a master manipulator. She traded information to the federal prosecutors in Chicago to pin the entirety of the conspiracy on her former husband. Legally, she was classified as a coerced accomplice, not the mastermind. The police wouldn't touch her without undeniable, current evidence of ongoing criminal activity. That’s why I needed you to see her true colors. Your testimony as her husband, combined with the physical ledgers in the cabin, is the only airtight case that will put her away for good."
Julian felt a heavy burden settle over his shoulders. He had invited a monster into his home, blinding himself to her red flags because he desperately wanted a maternal figure for Isabella. The memory of Isabella kneeling on the bright modern kitchen floor, cleaning up garbage while Elena smiled coldly, burned like acid in his mind. He would not let Elena escape accountability this time.

"We’re two hours out," Maya announced, checking the GPS navigation route. "She’s taking the scenic highway to avoid toll cameras. If we maintain this speed, we might intercept her right as she arrives at the property."
Julian pressed the accelerator down further, the engine roaring in response as they sped deeper into the northern wilderness, racing toward a confrontation that would finally bring their shared nightmare to an end.
