Chapter 12

The wail of police sirens cut sharply through the quiet pine forest, growing louder and closer with every passing second. Red and blue emergency lights flashed through the dusty windows of the rustic cabin, painting the wooden walls in shifting crimson and azure hues. Two state trooper vehicles pulled up sharply beside Julian’s sedan, kicking up clouds of dirt and frozen gravel.

Heavy footsteps crunched on the front porch before the door pushed open wide, revealing two armed state troopers with their badges gleaming in the morning light. They surveyed the chaotic scene inside: Julian standing upright and breathing heavily, Maya holding the heavy twine binding Elena’s wrists, and Elena herself lying restrained on the splintered floorboards, her immaculate appearance ruined by dirt and sweat.

"State police! Stay right where you are," the lead trooper commanded, stepping into the cabin with his hand resting on his holster before taking in the clear reality of the situation. He lowered his hand as he recognized Maya from her previous confidential briefings at the precinct. "Ms. Miller? Looks like you found what you were looking for."

"She was about to burn down the entire structure to destroy the evidence, Officer," Maya said, her voice steady as she stepped back to give the authorities room to operate. "The original victim ledgers from the Chicago fraud case are locked in the subfloor safe beneath the floorboards."

The trooper nodded, signaling his partner to secure Elena. The officers hauled Elena to her feet, reading her Miranda rights with cold professionalism. As they escorted her out toward the squad car, Elena turned her head one last time, fixing Julian with a stare of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you’ve won, Julian," she hissed as they pushed her into the back of the cruiser. "You’ll never get custody without a fight. I’ll make sure my lawyers drag your name through the mud until you have nothing left."

Julian didn't dignify her threats with a response. He simply watched the squad car doors slam shut before turning back into the cabin. The immediate danger had passed, but the emotional exhaustion of the ordeal settled heavily over his shoulders. He walked over to the corner of the room where Maya was kneeling beside a hidden floor panel, pulling out a heavy, rusted metal lockbox filled with decades-old financial records, bank statements, and signed confessions.

"It’s all here," Maya whispered, holding up a weathered ledger with trembling hands. "Every single document required to ensure she never sees the outside of a prison cell again."

Julian let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally draining from his frame. He pulled out his phone, dialing the hotel suite where Isabella was waiting under the care of his colleague. The phone picked up on the second ring.

"Dad?" Isabella’s small, tentative voice came through the speaker, carrying a trace of lingering fear.

"Hi, sweetie," Julian said, his voice softening instantly with overwhelming warmth and love. "It’s over. We’re coming back to get you, and we’re going home for good."
