Chapter 5

The silence on the line stretched for several agonizing seconds before Julian found his voice. "What do you mean, Sarah? What kind of secret?" He pressed the phone tighter against his ear, his eyes drifting back to the sofa where Isabella was sleeping fitfully, her small chest rising and falling in shallow rhythms.

"Meet me at the diner on 4th Street at eight o’clock tomorrow morning," Sarah said, her tone brook-no-argument firm. "Do not bring Isabella, and do not let Elena know where you are going. If Elena realizes you’re digging into her past, she won't just fight for a divorce settlement; she will burn your entire life to the ground to protect her social standing. She isn't just a cold stepmother, Julian. She’s a professional fraud."

Julian stared at his reflection in the dark hotel window, the city lights shimmering behind him like distant warning fires. "A fraud? Sarah, she passed every background check when we got married. She ran a high-end interior design consultancy."

"Design consultancy that went bankrupt under mysterious circumstances, leaving half a dozen elderly clients swindled out of their life savings," Sarah interrupted sharply. "I started looking into her background quietly after Isabella dropped those cryptic hints during my last visit. Elena changes identities like dresses, Julian. Her real name isn't even Elena Vance."

Julian felt a cold shiver run down his spine. The woman he had shared a bed with, the woman he had trusted with his only child, was a ghost with a fabricated history. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner?" he demanded, a surge of retrospective anger rising in his throat.

"Because you were defensive, infatuated, and completely blind," Sarah replied without hesitation. "You didn't want to hear it. But now you’ve seen the reality with your own eyes. Tomorrow morning, bring every document you have access to—tax returns, house deeds, joint accounts. We need to lock down your assets before she realizes her game is up and cleans out your corporate and personal accounts."

Julian ended the call and walked slowly back to the sofa, looking down at his sleeping daughter. The teal t-shirt she wore was slightly stained at the hem, a quiet testament to the indignities she had endured while he was away chasing corporate milestones. He realized with searing clarity that his obsession with providing financial security had cost his daughter her emotional safety. He pulled a chair up beside the sofa, sitting vigil through the remainder of the night, vowing that by sunrise, the reckoning would begin.

Morning light broke over the skyscrapers, casting long, sharp shadows across the hotel room. Julian gently woke Isabella, arranging for room service to bring her breakfast before calling a trusted colleague to watch over her for a couple of hours. Slipping back into his white button-down shirt and beige suit jacket, he kissed his daughter’s forehead and promised he would return shortly.
