Chapter 7

The drive back to the suburban estate felt entirely different in the harsh light of morning. The manicured lawns and stately brick homes now looked less like a peaceful sanctuary and more like a fortified compound hiding dark secrets. Julian parked his sedan in the circular driveway, stepping out into the crisp morning air. He adjusted his beige suit jacket, took a steadying breath, and walked up the front steps, pulling his house keys from his pocket.
The heavy front door swung open silently, revealing an unnervingly quiet foyer. There was no smell of breakfast, no sound of music, no sign of life. "Elena?" Julian called out, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings.
There was no answer. Julian walked past the grand staircase toward the back of the house, heading directly for the bright modern kitchen where this nightmare had begun just yesterday. The kitchen was immaculate. Every counter was wiped clean, the trash bags from the utility room were gone, and the dustpan hung neatly in its designated alcove. It was as if nothing had ever happened, a sterile monument to Elena’s obsessive need for control.
Then Julian noticed the glowing red light on the kitchen’s smart home control panel. He walked over and tapped the screen. A security log notification popped up: Master Suite Safe accessed at 8:14 AM.
Panic flared in his chest. Julian sprinted up the grand staircase, taking the steps two at a time. He pushed open the door to the master bedroom. The walk-in closet doors were wide open. Several designer jewelry boxes lay empty on the marble vanity, their velvet linings exposed. Elena’s passports, the emergency cash reserves he kept in the bedroom safe, and the physical deed to the house were all missing.
"Damn it," Julian muttered under his breath, pulling out his phone to check the banking app he had frozen less than an hour ago. The screen flashed a red warning banner: Alert: Attempted wire transfer of $250,000 to offshore account declined due to frozen status.
She had tried to drain the liquid reserves the moment she realized he was cutting her off. And when the transfer failed, she had grabbed whatever physical valuables she could carry and fled the premises. Julian walked over to the nightstand where Elena’s tablet still lay resting on the polished wood surface. The screen was lit up, displaying an open text message draft addressed to an unknown number.

Julian leaned in to read the glowing words, his blood running cold. The mark caught on. I’m moving to backup plan B. Meet me at the lake house by noon.
Before Julian could process the message further, the front door downstairs slammed shut with a reverberating bang that shook the walls of the entire estate. Julian froze, listening intently as light, hurried footsteps began ascending the staircase toward the master suite. He backed away from the nightstand, slipping his hand into his pocket as the bedroom door slowly pushed open to reveal an unexpected visitor standing in the threshold.
