Chapter 4

The engine of Julian’s luxury sedan hummed quietly as they navigated the winding suburban streets toward downtown. The afternoon sky was painted in bruised shades of purple and orange, mirroring the turbulent emotions churning inside the car. Isabella sat in the passenger seat, her small fingers nervously tracing the fabric of the turtle graphic on her teal t-shirt. She hadn't spoken since they left the house, her gaze glued to the passing blur of manicured lawns and towering oak trees.
"We are going to stay at the Grand Hotel tonight, sweetheart," Julian said gently, glancing sideways at his daughter. "Tomorrow, we’ll go to your favorite diner for pancakes, and then we are going to visit Dr. Morrison. How does that sound?"
Isabella turned her head slowly, her large, dark eyes reflecting the dashboard lights. "Is Elena coming with us?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper, freighted with an unmistakable dread.
"No, Isabella. Elena is staying behind," Julian replied firmly, gripping the steering wheel a little tighter. "You will never have to clean up her messes again. I promise you that."
The child let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension in her small shoulders dropping an inch. But Julian knew promises were cheap. He needed concrete proof of Elena’s psychological abuse to protect Isabella permanently. Driving past the sleek skyscrapers of the financial district, Julian’s thoughts drifted to Sarah, his late wife’s sister and Isabella’s aunt. Sarah was a seasoned family law investigator who had warned him about Elena’s social-climbing tendencies years ago, warnings Julian had foolishly dismissed as family paranoia.
Finding a quiet underground parking garage beneath the hotel, Julian parked the sedan and unbuckled his seatbelt. He helped Isabella out, keeping her close to his side as they navigated the polished marble lobby. The anonymity of the hotel provided a temporary fortress against the chaos of their domestic life. Once inside the expansive suite, with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering city skyline, Isabella immediately curled up in the corner of the plush velvet sofa, clutching a hotel throw pillow like a shield.
Julian ordered room service, watching helplessly as his daughter picked listlessly at a plate of fruit. The trauma of the afternoon had sapped all her energy. As she drifted off to sleep on the sofa, covered in a heavy wool blanket, Julian walked to the far corner of the suite and pulled out his phone. He dialed Sarah’s number, his hand trembling slightly as the phone rang into the quiet night.
"Julian? It’s past midnight," Sarah’s voice answered immediately, sharp and alert. "Is something wrong?"
May you like
"Everything is wrong, Sarah," Julian said, his voice cracking slightly despite his best efforts to remain composed. "You were right about Elena. All of it. I walked in on her forcing Isabella to clean up garbage from the utility bins off the kitchen floor. It was humiliating and cruel."
There was a heavy pause on the other end of the line. When Sarah spoke again, her voice was laced with a chilling realization. "You think that’s the worst of it, Julian? That’s just the surface. Elena has been systematically erasing Isabella’s independence for over a year. And that’s not even the darkest secret she’s hiding in that house."
