Chapter 14

Two weeks later, the suburban estate hosted a very different kind of gathering. The afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the manicured lawn as Julian and Maya set up a small outdoor dining table on the back patio. Isabella was busy chasing a bright yellow butterfly across the green grass, her laughter ringing out freely into the crisp autumn air. The haunting hesitation that had once defined her every movement was entirely gone, replaced by the natural, carefree joy of a nine-year-old child reclaiming her childhood.
Sarah walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of freshly squeezed lemonade, setting it down on the wooden table before wiping her hands on her apron. "The prosecution’s case is completely airtight," Sarah said, looking over at Julian with an encouraging smile. "Elena’s defense attorneys have officially advised her to take a plea deal. Twenty years minimum, with no option for early parole."
Julian nodded slowly, feeling a deep, settling calm wash over him. "Good. Let her spend the rest of her natural life behind bars thinking about the lives she destroyed. We’re finally closing that chapter for good."
Maya walked over from the garden, brushing dirt off her jeans and smiling as she watched Isabella successfully catch the butterfly in her cupped hands before gently letting it fly away toward the oak trees. "It feels surreal," Maya murmured, leaning against the patio railing. "For ten years, my entire life revolved around hunting her down. Now that it’s actually over, I don't quite know what to do with myself."
"You do whatever you want, Maya," Julian said warmly, stepping closer to her. "You have a home here as long as you want it. You saved my daughter’s life, and you helped restore our family."
Maya looked up, her dark eyes shining with quiet gratitude. "I helped save myself, too, Julian. Seeing Isabella safe and free... it gave me closure I never thought I’d find."
Later that evening, after Sarah had departed and the sun had dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in vibrant shades of indigo and amber, Julian tucked Isabella into her bed. The little girl clutched her favorite stuffed animal close to her chest, her eyelids growing heavy with sleep.
"Dad?" Isabella whispered softly in the quiet room.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Julian answered, stroking her dark hair gently.
"Are you going away on a business trip tomorrow?" she asked, a trace of vulnerability still lingering in her voice.
May you like
Julian smiled, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Not a chance, sweetie. My next trip is right here in the living room building Lego towers with you. I’m never leaving you unprotected again. Go to sleep."
Isabella smiled contently, her breathing slowing into a peaceful, even rhythm as she drifted off to a safe, dreamless sleep.
