Chapter 8 - The Digital Evidence Unveiled

Investigator Davis looked down at the tablet resting in her palms, her brow furrowing as the glowing screen illuminated the encrypted folder interface Marcus had just unlocked. Officer Miller shifted his weight, stepping closer to secure the perimeter of the room, his eyes fixed on Elena, who stood frozen like a statue carved from ice.
"What is this?" Davis asked, looking up from the device to meet Marcus’s weary, haunted eyes.
"It’s an archive," Marcus answered, his voice devoid of emotion, the exhaustion of the evening finally catching up to him. "Every camera feed, every log, every recording my wife has kept of our children over the past eighteen months. She installed the system. She locked the food away. She kept them prisoners in their own home."
Elena let out a sharp, breathless laugh—a brittle, manic sound that made everyone in the room flinch. She stepped forward, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, untamed fury as she pointed a trembling finger at her husband.
"You fool," Elena spat, her voice rising in volume and pitch. "You absolute coward! You think handing them a file saves you? You think you're the hero in this story because you finally opened your eyes after five years of burying your head in your work?"
Officer Miller stepped between Elena and Marcus, raising a hand to halt her advance. "Ma'am, I need you to step back and keep your hands where I can see them."
"Don't you dare touch me!" Elena snarled, jerking her arm away from the officer’s reach. She turned her intense, manic gaze back to Investigator Davis. "Go ahead. Open that folder. Play the clips. But listen to the context, you self-righteous bureaucrat. Listen to what happens before the tears start."
Davis ignored Elena’s outburst, her fingers swiping across the screen. She tapped the first video file in the sequence—a recording from three months prior. The built-in speaker crackled to life in the quiet dining room, broadcasting the audio of a dark bedroom at two in the morning.
On the screen, a shadowy figure moved across the room toward Maya’s crib. It wasn't Elena. It was Leo.
The room went deathly silent. Everyone on the dining room floor—Marcus, Elena, Officer Miller, and Davis—stared at the tablet screen as the audio played out in chilling clarity.
On the recording, seven-year-old Leo leaned over his younger sister’s crib, whispering something so softly the microphone barely picked it up. Davis frowned, turning the volume up to maximum.
“If you tell them I took your snacks, I’ll make sure you never see the light of day again,” the audio hissed from the device.

Marcus turned his head slowly, his eyes widening in absolute horror as he looked across the dining table at his oldest son.
