Chapter 4 - The Encrypted Archive

Marcus’s thumb hovered over the folder labeled with encrypted numbers on the tablet screen. The dining room grew deathly quiet, save for the faint, rhythmic ticking of the wall clock and Maya’s quiet, sporadic sniffles. Elena lunged forward with a sudden, desperate speed that caught Marcus entirely off guard, her hand clawing at the device.
"Give it to me, Marcus! You have no right to open that!" Elena screamed, her composure entirely shattering as she grabbed the edge of the tablet.
Marcus jerked his arm back, easily overpowering her, but the sheer violence of her reaction confirmed his worst fears. He held the tablet high out of her reach, his eyes wide with shock as he stared down at his wife. The cold, calculated demeanor she had worn all evening had evaporated, replaced by the frantic, animalistic panic of someone trapped in a corner.
"Stay back, Elena," Marcus warned, his voice hard as steel. He tapped the folder icon. A password prompt immediately flashed on the screen, demanding a six-digit numerical code.
Elena stopped struggling, her chest heaving beneath her dark blue sleeveless top. She let her arms fall to her sides, a bitter, defeated smile twisting the corners of her mouth. She adjusted her posture, regaining a chilling semblance of her former composure as she stared coldly at her husband.
"Go ahead," Elena whispered, her voice dripping with dangerous sarcasm. "Type it in. See what kind of monster you think you married. But remember, Marcus, once you open that door, there is no walking back to the life you thought you had."
Marcus hesitated, his finger trembling over the touch keyboard. He looked down at Maya, who was still clinging to the hem of his trousers, and then over at Leo, who watched them both with that unsettling, detached gaze. The atmosphere in the room felt thick, almost toxic, as if the very air had turned to lead.
"What is in this folder, Elena?" Marcus demanded, ignoring her taunt. "Are these security logs, or is this something else?"
"It’s your family, Marcus," Elena replied cryptically, tilting her head. "The family you claim to care about so much while you're sitting in your glass tower downtown, billing hours and ignoring what really happens under your roof."
Marcus set his jaw, refusing to be baited by her deflection. He looked back at the screen. Six digits. He thought of birthdays, anniversaries, the security pin for his office, and the day they moved into this house. He punched in the anniversary of their wedding. Incorrect password. Three attempts remaining.
A cold sweat broke out across Marcus’s forehead. He glanced at Elena, whose smile widened just a fraction. She knew he couldn't guess it. She held the key to whatever dark secret was locked away inside the digital vault, and she was daring him to fail.
"Tell me the code," Marcus ordered, stepping toward her.
Before Elena could answer, Leo spoke up from across the room, his voice cutting through the tension like a razor blade.

"It’s Maya’s birthday, Dad," Leo said casually. "Mom uses it for everything."
