Chapter 5 - The Birthdate Key

Marcus froze, his finger hovering over the virtual keypad. He looked down at Maya, who was staring up at the glowing screen with wide, uncomprehending eyes, and then back at Leo. The revelation that their seven-year-old son knew the password to a supposedly secret, encrypted surveillance archive sent a fresh wave of nausea rolling through Marcus’s stomach.

With a trembling hand, Marcus typed in Maya’s four-digit birthdate followed by two zeros.

Access Granted.

The folder expanded instantly, revealing hundreds of video clips sorted by date and time, stretching back over eighteen months. Thumbnail images populated the screen, and Marcus felt the breath rush entirely from his lungs. The thumbnails weren't wide-angle shots of hallways or exterior doors. They were close-up, invasive recordings of Maya sleeping, Maya crying, Maya sitting alone in dark corners of the house, and most horrifyingly, Maya being interrogated under harsh, overhead lighting by Elena.

"What... what is all of this?" Marcus whispered, the words catching in his dry throat as he tapped the most recent file.

The video began to play with a soft audio hiss. On the screen, a younger Maya—hardly more than a toddler—sat on the kitchen floor, sobbing hysterically while holding a crushed piece of bread. Elena stood over her, completely out of frame, but her voice echoed chillingly from the tablet speaker.

“You take what you are given, or you take nothing at all. Do you understand me?”

On the screen, little Maya nodded frantically, terrified, tears streaming down her face as Elena snatched the bread away and tossed it into the trash can.

Marcus lowered the tablet, his vision swimming. He looked at Elena, his expression a mask of pure devastation and rage. The restraint he had practiced for years, the calm demeanor he brought to his high-pressure job, completely fractured.

"You've been starving her," Marcus said, his voice barely a breath, carrying a weight that seemed to crush the room. "Not because she has an eating disorder. Because you've been running some sick, twisted psychological experiment on our daughter."

Elena didn't flinch. She met his gaze with unblinking hostility, stepping forward until she was inches away from him.

"I am shaping her," Elena whispered fiercely, her voice laced with venom. "I am making sure she survives a world that eats the weak. You make money, Marcus, but I build character. And you have no idea what else I’ve had to do to keep this family safe from what's coming."

Before Marcus could process her chilling confession, the front doorbell echoed sharply through the quiet house, shattering the suffocating silence.

Elena’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror, her color vanishing as she whispered, "They're early."
