Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Suspicion

The afternoon sunlight slanted harshly across the mahogany dining room table, illuminating the untouched plate of steamed vegetables pushed far beyond the reach of four-year-old Maya. Maya stood pressed against Marcus’s navy blue suit trousers, her small frame wracked with silent, shuddering sobs, her pristine white dress stained with salt water. Marcus stood frozen in the white doorway, his briefcase still clutched in one hand, his eyes darting from the weeping child to his wife, Elena. Elena remained standing over the table, her posture rigid, her long black hair pulled back tightly from a face carved from stone. Seven-year-old Leo sat calmly in his chair, a fork suspended midway to his mouth, chewing a bite of dry white rice with a mechanical rhythm.
Marcus let out a slow, heavy breath, his chest rising beneath his tailored jacket. He felt the familiar weight of a long day at the firm pressing down on his shoulders, instantly compounded by the suffocating tension in the room. He looked down at Maya, who clutched his leg with desperate, white-knuckled fingers.
"Elena, what is going on here?" Marcus asked, his voice low, steady, and strained with fatigue. "Why doesn’t she have dinner?"
Elena did not blink. She kept her gaze locked on Leo, who calmly swallowed his food before daring to speak.
"She stole food after I told her no," Elena said, her tone flat, devoid of any maternal warmth.
Marcus stepped further into the room, his jaw tightening as he looked down at Maya. The little girl buried her face deeper into the fabric of his trousers, her voice muffled and trembling.
"She locks the food away from me," Maya whispered, her small body convulsing with a fresh wave of tears.
Leo lowered his fork, looking up at his father with a chillingly blank expression.
"She does this when you're at work," Leo added, his voice unnaturally steady for a seven-year-old.
Marcus felt a cold prickle of unease crawl up the back of his neck. He looked at the center of the table, where a sleek tablet computer rested, its screen dark and reflective. Without breaking eye contact with Elena, Marcus reached out, his hand sweeping across the polished wood, and snatched the device.

"Give me that," Marcus demanded, hitting the home button and watching the screen snap to life to reveal a grid of active camera feeds covering every single room in the house.
