Chapter 14 - The Final Message

The sharp chime of the tablet cut through the hum of police radios and the quiet murmurs of the officers near the door. Everyone in the dining room froze. Investigator Davis turned sharply, her hand resting near her holster as she strode back toward the table, her eyes locked on the glowing screen.
Marcus sat up straight, his breath catching in his throat, while Elena shrank back slightly, her hands trembling in her lap.
A single notification banner flashed across the top of the dark screen: Incoming Secure P2P Transmission from Local Node.
"Don't touch it," Officer Miller warned, stepping closer with his flashlight drawn. "It could be a trap or a remote wipe command designed to scrub the remaining local cache."
"It’s not a wipe," Marcus said, staring at the sender ID displayed beneath the notification. The string of numbers matched the encrypted folder they had unlocked earlier, but appended to the end was a new identifier—a signature they all recognized instantly.
Leo_Node_01.
Without hesitation, Marcus reached out, his thumb pressing firmly against the touch screen to accept the transmission before the police cyber unit could intervene.
The screen flickered, and a short video file began to play automatically.
The camera angle was high, shot from the corner of a dimly lit, sterile room that looked like a high-end corporate office or a private server facility somewhere in the city. Leo sat in a sleek leather chair behind a polished glass desk, wearing his light blue button-down shirt, looking remarkably calm and composed.
The built-in speaker broadcast his clear, steady voice into the quiet dining room.
“Dad, Mom, you don't need to look for me,” Leo said, looking directly into the camera lens with his chillingly blank stare. “I’m where I belong now. Out there, people don't care about feelings or rules. They care about efficiency. They care about results. The network gave me what you never could: a purpose.”
On the screen, a second figure—an adult wearing a tailored suit—walked into the frame, placing a heavy hand on Leo’s shoulder and smiling down at the boy approvingly before the feed abruptly cut to black.
The dining room descended into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Maya looked up from her bowl of soup, her big eyes blinking slowly as she stared at the dark screen. She reached out her small hand, slipping her fingers into Marcus’s palm, seeking the comfort and safety she had been denied for so long.
Marcus squeezed her small hand tightly, a single tear spilling over his lashes and tracking down his cheek. He looked across the table at Elena, knowing that while their family was broken beyond repair, the nightmare under their roof was finally over, and the hardest journey of healing was about to begin.

Before anyone could speak, the tablet screen flickered one last time, displaying a single line of text before the battery finally died.
