Chapter 10 - The Lockdown Protocol

A sharp, high-pitched electronic tone echoed through the walls of the house, followed by the heavy mechanical clunk of deadbolts engaging on every exterior door and window simultaneously. The overhead lights flickered once and died, plunging the dining room into a deep, eerie twilight illuminated only by the pale blue glow of the tablet screen in Investigator Davis’s hands.
Officer Miller instinctively drew his service weapon, stepping back toward the front entry only to find the heavy oak door jammed tight against its reinforced steel frame.
"System override initiated," a synthesized automated voice droned monotonously from the smart-home speakers embedded in the ceiling. "All exits secured. Network offline."
Elena screamed, lunging across the table toward her son, but Leo sidestepped her with terrifying agility, darting down the dark hallway toward the kitchen.
"Stop him!" Elena cried, turning to Marcus and the officers. "He’s locking the master control panel in the pantry! If he cuts the manual overrides, we won't be able to open the security shutters for forty-eight hours!"
Marcus didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins, overriding the shock and horror that had paralyzed him moments before. He sprinted down the hallway after his son, the sound of his dress shoes pounding furiously against the hardwood floor.
"Leo! Stop right now!" Marcus bellowed into the darkness.
He reached the kitchen just as the heavy pantry door slammed shut with a definitive metallic click. Marcus threw his weight against the wood, crashing his shoulder hard into the reinforced panel, but the commercial-grade deadbolt held firm. Inside the pantry, the faint tap-tap-tap of tiny fingers hitting a digital keypad echoed through the hollow walls.
"You can't get in here, Dad," Leo’s voice filtered calmly through the ventilation grill near the floor. "I programmed the master sequence. The only way to open it is with the biometric scanner, and Mom’s print was revoked thirty minutes ago."
Marcus struck the door with his fist, a deep sob tearing from his chest. He slid down the wooden frame, sitting heavily on the kitchen floor in the dim emergency light, realizing with sickening clarity just how deeply outmatched they were by the mind of a seven-year-old boy.
Footsteps echoed softly behind him. Elena walked into the dark kitchen, her silhouette faint against the ambient light from the dining room. She knelt beside him, resting a trembling hand on his shoulder.
"I tried to tell you, Marcus," she whispered, her voice broken and defeated. "I tried to handle it alone because I was so ashamed of what my son had become. And now, we're all trapped in the trap he built."

From down the hall, Investigator Davis’s voice rang out, urgent and demanding. "Mr. Reynolds! You need to get back here. The tablet... the tablet just received an incoming broadcast from an unknown IP address!"
