Chapter 6 - The Visitor at the Door

The sharp chime of the doorbell reverberated through the spacious dining room, sounding unnatural and jarring against the heavy, tense atmosphere. Marcus stood frozen, the tablet still clutched in his hand, the glowing screen paused on a frame of weeping little Maya from eighteen months ago. He looked from the terrifying image on the screen to Elena, whose face had gone completely pale, her composure finally shattered into a million jagged pieces.

"Who is at the door, Elena?" Marcus demanded, his voice slicing through the silence. He shifted Maya behind his leg again, instinctively shielding her. "Who did you say was coming?"

Elena didn't answer. She stood rooted to the hardwood floor, her breathing shallow and rapid, her dark eyes darting toward the entryway as if expecting a ghost to materialize through the wood. The doorbell chimed a second time, longer and more insistent.

Leo didn't flinch. He remained seated near the table, his expression completely neutral, swinging his legs back and forth with a rhythmic motion that felt entirely out of place.

"They're here to check on Maya," Leo said matter-of-factly, looking directly at his father.

Marcus spun around, staring down at his seven-year-old son in disbelief. "Check on her? What are you talking about, Leo? Who is 'they'?"

Before Leo could reply, a heavy knock rattled the front door, followed by the muffled sound of a key turning in the deadbolt. Marcus’s blood ran cold. He had the only other key to that lock on his key ring, buried deep in his briefcase by the dining table.

"Elena, you gave someone else a key to our house?" Marcus shouted, taking a threatening step toward his wife. "Explain yourself right now, or I swear to God I will call the police from this very device!"

"You can't call the police," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she finally found her tongue. She reached out, her hand grazing his sleeve in a desperate plea. "If you involve them, everything we’ve built, everything I’ve protected... it all gets torn apart. Not just for us. For Leo."

"I don't care about what you've built!" Marcus roared, the restrained emotion finally breaking through his defenses. He stepped past her, marching toward the entryway.

The heavy white front door swung open with a soft creak. Standing on the porch, bathed in the dim light of the evening streetlamps, was a middle-aged woman wearing a sharp grey trench coat, holding a heavy leather binder under one arm. Behind her stood a towering man in a dark uniform, his expression grim and professional.

"Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds," the woman said, stepping uninvited across the threshold. Her eyes swept over the dining room, taking in Maya’s tear-stained face, Marcus’s furious stance, and Elena’s terrified posture. "I’m social services investigator Davis, and this is Officer Miller. We received an anonymous tip regarding the welfare of the children in this residence."

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, the tablet heavy in his hand as he stared at the two intruders.
