Chapter 9 - Voices from the Past

The word audio hung in the air like a physical threat. Elena’s carefully maintained composure finally snapped entirely. She lunged forward, ignoring the police officer blocking her path, her face twisted in absolute terror.
"That's a lie!" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "There were no recordings! The system was completely destroyed in the fire! You're fabricating evidence!"
Detective Vance didn't even flinch at her outburst. He motioned to a tech officer standing near the entrance, who stepped forward holding a ruggedized laptop. The officer pressed a single button, and the tinny, muffled sound of a decade-old digital recording began to echo off the marble walls of the grand foyer.
“...if the wiring report gets out, we lose everything,” a young man’s voice argued through the static—a voice that sounded unmistakably like a younger Julian, though sharper and more desperate.
“Then we make sure the report never sees the desk,” a smooth, elderly voice replied—a voice that belonged undeniably to Arthur. “And as for Margaret, she saw too much by the east wing circuit. We let the fire take care of the loose ends.”
Julian froze. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in his black velvet blazer. He stared at the laptop in horror. That wasn't his voice. It belonged to his older brother, Thomas. But the response from Arthur was chillingly clear, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the old lawyer had planned the disaster from the very beginning.
"That's edited," Arthur said, his voice remarkably steady despite the damning evidence, though a single bead of sweat rolled down his wrinkled temple. "Deepfake audio technology has advanced significantly in recent years, Detective. Anyone with basic programming skills could synthesize those vocal patterns."
"We cross-referenced the metadata, Arthur," the tech officer replied smoothly, looking up from the screen. "The file was saved directly onto the mansion's main mainframe at 3:14 AM on the exact night of the fire, encoded with your personal administrative key."
Arthur fell silent. The sophisticated veneer he had worn for thirty years began to crumble around him, revealing the desperate, cornered man underneath.
Elena turned her frantic gaze toward Julian, her eyes wide and pleading. "Julian, you have to believe me! I had nothing to do with what Arthur and your brother planned! I was just a pawn in their game! They forced me to stay silent!"
Julian looked down at his wife, feeling a profound, hollow emptiness where love and trust once resided. "You lied to me every single day of our marriage, Elena. You watched me mourn my brother for ten years while you helped protect the man who killed him."
"I was protecting us!" Elena wept, finally breaking down into real, unscripted tears as she fell to her knees on the marble floor—mirroring the exact position Clara had occupied just an hour earlier. "If the estate went bankrupt, we would have had nothing! I did it for our future!"
Clara watched the fallen heiress sobbing on the cold stone, feeling no triumph, only a deep, melancholic sorrow for the rot that lay hidden beneath the veneer of extreme wealth.
Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. He clicked them open with a sharp, metallic snap.

"Arthur Sterling, Elena Vance," the detective said formally, stepping between them. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and the unlawful suppression of a criminal investigation."
