Chapter 5 - The Intruder in the Dark

The hallway outside was pitch black, the crystal chandeliers having dimmed automatically on their evening timer. Julian stepped out into the shadows, the heavy brass candlestick raised defensively in his right hand. Clara pressed her back against the library doorframe, straining her eyes to pierce the gloom. Elena remained inside the room, breathing heavily, clutching the edge of the mahogany table for support.
"Who's there?" Julian called out, his voice cutting cleanly through the silence of the massive estate.
A floorboard creaked near the grand staircase. A tall silhouette detached itself from the shadows of the wood-paneled wall, moving with deliberate, unhurried steps. As the figure stepped under the faint amber glow of a wall sconce, Clara let out a soft gasp. It was not a thief, nor was it a random intruder. It was Arthur, the elderly family lawyer who had managed the estate's affairs for over thirty years, dressed impeccably in a charcoal three-piece suit.
"Arthur," Julian lowered the candlestick slightly, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What are you doing here at this hour? The gates were locked hours ago."
The old lawyer offered a thin, tired smile, his spectacles catching the dim light. "Security systems in this house leave much to be desired, Julian. Especially when the master is distracted by domestic disputes." Arthur’s eyes flicked past Julian toward the open library door, where Elena stood trembling in the shadows. "I see you found Margaret’s letter."
Julian went completely rigid. The brass candlestick slipped an inch in his grip. "What did you say?"
"I said," Arthur repeated calmly, adjusting his cuffs, "that you found the letter. I was the one who hid it in that floorboard ten years ago, Julian. Not Margaret."
The revelation hit Julian like a physical blow. He stared at the old man, struggling to reconcile the trusted family advisor with the voice behind the decade-old cover-up. "You? Why would you hide evidence of sabotage?"
"To protect this family from total ruin," Arthur replied smoothly, taking another step forward. "Thomas was a reckless young man with many enemies, and the debts he accumulated would have bankrupted the estate overnight. Sometimes, tragic accidents are far more merciful than the truth."
Elena stepped out of the library, her panic temporarily replaced by desperate relief. "See, Julian? Arthur understands. It was all for the good of the family name."
"Shut up, Elena," Arthur snapped, his tone instantly shifting from grandfatherly warmth to cold, corporate menace. The sudden harshness in the old lawyer's voice stunned them all into absolute silence.
Clara shrank back into the darkness of the doorway, realizing she was witnessing secrets that powerful people would kill to keep buried.
Arthur reached slowly into his breast pocket. Julian tensed, raising the candlestick again, expecting a weapon. Instead, the lawyer pulled out a sleek, modern smartphone, the screen glowing brightly in the dark corridor, displaying a live security feed of the estate's main gates.

"We don't have time to argue about the past," Arthur said calmly, turning the screen toward Julian. "Because the police are three minutes away, and they aren't here for a domestic dispute."
