Chapter 14 - The Final Choice

Julian didn't answer his phone. He kept his dark eyes locked onto his uncle's cold, mocking expression, the vibration in his pocket humming like a dying heartbeat against his ribs. The realization settled over him with crushing finality: the corruption in this family ran far deeper than a single corrupt lawyer or a terrified wife. It was institutional, systemic, and seemingly inescapable.
"You think you bought off the entire department?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury.
"I didn't buy anyone off, Julian. I own the board," Victor replied smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive shirt. He signaled to the two enforcers standing behind him. "Now, be a good nephew and hand over whatever you found in the east wing floorboards. The letters, the ledger, the locket—give it all to me right now, and I’ll let you and your little maid walk out of those front gates with enough money to live comfortably in exile."
"And if I refuse?" Julian asked, his hand sliding slowly into his coat pocket, his fingers wrapping around the cold metal of the brass key.
Victor’s smile faded into a flat, deadly line. "Then the fire in the west wing will finally finish what it started ten years ago. Only this time, the report will state that the master of the house died in a tragic, accidental blaze while trying to rescue his family's legacy."
Before Victor could signal his enforcers to move, a sudden noise echoed from the grand staircase above.
Clara stood at the top of the steps, holding the heavy wooden lockbox in her arms. She had disobeyed Julian’s command to hide, realizing that staying put meant waiting to be executed.
"Don't give it to him, Mr. Julian!" Clara yelled down, her voice ringing clear and brave through the foyer.
Victor’s head snapped upward. His eyes narrowed with pure venom as he spotted the young maid holding the box. "Get her," he ordered his enforcers.
The two burly men immediately charged toward the grand staircase, taking the steps two at a time.
"Run, Clara!" Julian shouted, lunging forward to tackle the first enforcer before he could reach the landing.
The man caught Julian square in the chest, sending them both crashing hard against the polished wooden banister. Clara screamed, dropping the wooden lockbox as she turned to flee back down the east wing corridor. The box hit the marble floor of the foyer with a deafening crack, the lid shattering open, spilling its contents across the stone—including a heavy gold cassette tape labeled in bold red ink: THE FULL CONFESSION.
