Chapter 4 - The Unforgiven Past

The mention of the fire seemed to drop a physical weight into the dimly lit library. Clara watched the silent power struggle between the man and the woman, sensing that she had stumbled into something far darker than a simple case of misplaced jewelry. Ten years ago, the estate’s west wing had suffered a devastating blaze that claimed the life of Julian’s older brother, Thomas. The official report ruled it an electrical accident, a tragic anomaly in an otherwise impenetrable fortress of wealth.

"You're paying attention to nonsense," Elena hissed, her voice rising an octave as she took a panicked step backward. "That letter was written by a bitter, uneducated servant who hated this family. Everyone knows Thomas died because of faulty wiring. Bringing up past ghosts won't bring him back."

"Faulty wiring?" Julian repeated, his voice dangerously calm. He stood up slowly, unfolding the parchment further so the moonlight illuminated the dark ink. "That's strange, Elena. Because Margaret writes here that she personally replaced the wiring in the west wing just a week before the fire, and that it was entirely brand new copper."

Elena swallowed hard, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her silk robe. "Servants lie to cover up their mistakes all the time! She probably botched the installation and invented a conspiracy theory to save her own reputation before she ran away."

"She didn't run away," Julian said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. He stepped toward Elena, backing her up against the edge of a mahogany table. "Margaret states in this letter that she witnessed someone tampering with the main circuit breaker the night before the tragedy. Someone wearing a custom signet ring."

Julian raised his left hand, flashing the heavy gold ring on his pinky finger—a ring identical to the one worn by Thomas, and the one Elena had given to Julian on their wedding day, claiming it was a family heirloom she found in his brother's drawer.

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. The implications hung in the air, sharp and suffocating.

Elena’s facade finally shattered completely. Her chest heaved beneath the champagne silk, and a hysterical laugh slipped past her lips. "You really think I would do that? You think I murdered your brother?"

"I didn't say you murdered him," Julian replied, his eyes piercing through her defenses. "I said you knew about the ring. And judging by how fast you are unraveling right now, I'd say you knew a lot more than that."

Before Elena could formulate a response, a heavy thud echoed from the hallway outside the library doors. Someone—or something—had just dropped a heavy object against the wood-paneled walls.

Julian immediately dropped the letter into his pocket, his protective instincts overriding his anger. He grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from a nearby table, signaling for Clara to stay behind him.

"Stay here," Julian commanded quietly, easing the library door open an inch.
