Chapter 2 - The Hidden Inscription

The metal pendant lay exposed on the polished marble floor, glinting under the harsh glare of the crystal chandelier. Julian froze, his hand suspended halfway between his own knee and Clara’s trembling fingers. His dark eyes locked onto the tiny engraving on the back of the silver locket—a set of initials that had not been spoken aloud in this estate for over a decade. Elena crossed her arms in her silky champagne robe, a triumphant sneer returning to her painted lips.
"See? I told you, Julian," Elena demanded, her voice sharp and vindictive. "She is a common thief who roots through family heirlooms. Why you always defend the help is beyond my comprehension. Fire her immediately, or I will call the authorities myself."
Julian ignored her shrill voice. Slowly, deliberately, he bent down and picked up the pendant. The metal was still warm from Clara’s pocket. He turned it over in his palm, running his thumb over the engraved initials: M.V. His breath hitched. This was not his grandmother’s heirloom, as Elena had so aggressively claimed. It belonged to Margaret Vance, the estate's former head housekeeper who had vanished under mysterious circumstances ten years ago, leaving behind only unanswered questions and a grieving family.
Clara watched him with wide, tear-filled eyes, terrified that the strange man would believe Elena's fabricated narrative. "I found it, Mr. Julian," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the mansion's central heating. "I was cleaning behind the loose floorboards in the east wing library. It rolled out. I didn't steal it."
"Lies!" Elena shrieked, stepping forward. "She’s inventing stories to save her miserable skin! Julian, give me that pendant right now. It has no business being in her filthy hands."
Julian stood up slowly, towering over Elena with a cold, terrifying stillness that silenced her instantly. The easygoing charm he usually projected in public societies had completely vanished, replaced by an unsettling, razor-sharp focus.
"Quiet, Elena," Julian said quietly, his voice lacking any warmth. "This is not my grandmother's necklace. And you know it very well."
Elena’s face drained of color, the haughty mask slipping for a fraction of a second before she recovered her composure with a forced, nervous laugh. "What are you talking about, Julian? Have you lost your mind? It’s family property."
"Is it?" Julian stepped closer to her, his dark eyes narrowing. "Because I happen to remember the exact day this pendant went missing. It was the same night Margaret disappeared from this very house. And yet, you claimed just now that it was sitting on your vanity."
Clara gasped softly, shifting back on her knees as the heavy atmosphere in the grand hallway grew suffocatingly dense.

Julian turned back to Clara, extending his hand once more to help her to her feet. "Can you show me exactly where you found this?"
