Chapter 6 - The Arrival at the Gates

The glowing screen of Arthur’s smartphone illuminated the dark corridor, casting eerie blue light across the worried faces of Julian and Elena. Three police cruisers were clearly visible on the live feed, their emergency lights flashing soundlessly against the wrought-iron security gates of the estate. Julian stared at the screen, his mind racing to connect the pieces. The estate was completely private, situated miles outside the city limits. No one outside these walls should have known about the necklace, the fire, or Margaret's hidden letter.
"Who called them?" Julian demanded, his gaze locking onto Arthur. "Only a handful of people have the clearance code for the private security frequency."
Arthur didn't flinch. He slowly pocketed his phone, his expression remaining maddeningly serene. "That, my boy, is the million-dollar question. But I suspect it has something to do with the financial audit you commissioned last month. Some accounts were never meant to be reconciled."
Elena stepped forward, her face twisted in absolute panic. "An audit? Julian, you audited the estate accounts without telling me? After everything we've built together, you still don't trust me?"
"Trust is a two-way street, Elena," Julian replied coldly, not even looking at his wife. He turned back to Arthur. "If the police are at the gates, they have a warrant. What are they looking for?"
"Everything," Arthur answered bluntly. "The insurance fraud from the west wing fire ten years ago, the missing funds from the trust, and quite possibly, a murder investigation reopened by an anonymous tip."
Clara listened from the doorway, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked down at the hem of her maid uniform, suddenly acutely aware of how dangerous her position was. She was a witness in a house of apex predators, holding a piece of evidence that could either destroy them all or buy her own destruction.
"We need to burn the letter," Elena hissed, grabbing Julian's arm. "Right now. If the police find that parchment, they won't just look at the past—they will tear this entire empire down to the studs."
"No," Julian said firmly, pulling his arm away from her grip. "The truth stays."
Before Arthur could offer another calculating response, a heavy pounding echoed from the front of the mansion. The authorities had breached the outer courtyard gates and were now hammering on the massive mahogany front doors. The booming sound reverberated through the wood-paneled walls of the grand hallway, shattering the illusion of untouchable wealth that the estate had maintained for generations.
"They're inside," Clara whispered, her voice trembling as she peeked down the long hallway toward the grand staircase.
Arthur sighed heavily, smoothing down the lapels of his charcoal suit. "Well, Julian. It appears your pursuit of justice has arrived right on schedule. I hope you are prepared for what comes next."
Julian took a deep, steadying breath, his fingers curling tightly around Margaret’s letter in his pocket. He looked at Clara, then past her to Elena, before turning his face toward the front entrance.

"Open the doors," Julian commanded the empty hallway.
