Chapter 7 - Uniforms in the Foyer

Heavy boots marched across the polished marble floors of the grand foyer, instantly shattering the quiet elegance of the estate. Uniformed police officers poured through the open front doors, led by a tall, stern-looking detective with silver-streaked hair and sharp gray eyes. The crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to mock the sudden intrusion, casting sparkling reflections over the badges of the men and women who had come to dismantle the Vance family legacy.
Detective Vance—no relation to the estate owners, despite the ironic coincidence—stopped at the foot of the grand staircase. His gaze swept over the scene: Julian standing tall in his black velvet blazer, Elena clutching her champagne silk robe with white knuckles, Arthur adjusting his spectacles with detached calm, and young Clara standing nervously by the east wing corridor.
"Julian Vance?" the detective asked, his voice cutting through the cavernous space.
"I am," Julian replied, stepping forward without a trace of intimidation. "To what do we owe this early morning intrusion?"
Detective Vance pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and snapped it open. "We have a search and seizure warrant issued by a federal judge, backed by a sworn affidavit detailing financial malfeasance, insurance fraud, and the unlawful suppression of evidence related to the death of Thomas Vance ten years ago."
Elena let out a sharp, theatrical gasp, pressing a hand to her chest. "This is an outrage! My husband is a respected member of society. We are being targeted by malicious lies!"
"Save the performance for the courtroom, Mrs. Vance," the detective said smoothly, not blinking an eye at her display. He signaled to his team. "Secure the perimeter. Search the library, the study, and all private quarters. Check the flooring and the wall panels."
Officers immediately dispersed, their radios crackling with static as they fanned out across the mansion. Clara shrank back against the wall, hoping to make herself invisible. But Detective Vance's sharp eyes immediately locked onto her.
"And who is this?" the detective asked, walking slowly toward the young maid.
"She is just a member of the domestic staff, Detective," Julian intervened quickly, stepping between the officer and Clara. "She has nothing to do with any of this."
"Let the young lady speak for herself, Mr. Vance," the detective countered, stopping just inches from Julian. He tilted his head. "Especially since our anonymous tip specifically mentioned that a domestic worker recently recovered a piece of crucial evidence from the east wing."
Clara swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry. She looked up at Julian, seeing the silent plea in his dark eyes not to betray the secret, and then at Detective Vance’s demanding expression.
"I... I found something," Clara whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
Elena let out a furious hiss, taking a threatening step forward, but a nearby police officer immediately intercepted her, blocking her path.
"Tell me what you found, Clara," Detective Vance prompted gently, leaning down slightly to meet her terrified gaze.

Clara reached slowly into her apron pocket, her fingers brushing against the cold, empty space where the silver pendant had been just minutes before. Her heart stopped.
