Chapter 8 - The Federal Threshold

The heavy brass chime above the front doors echoed through the suddenly silent dining room, freezing everyone in their tracks. The two men who stepped inside did not look like ordinary patrons; their dark, tailored suits, synchronized strides, and sharp, sweeping gazes marked them instantly as federal agents. They moved with a quiet, deliberate authority that commanded the entire room, parting the lingering atmosphere of tension like a cold front.
Julian’s hand, which had been half-extended toward Eleanor's coat pocket, dropped instantly to his side. His face lost all remaining color, turning the pale hue of old parchment. He swallowed hard, taking a half-step backward as the lead agent—a tall, sharp-featured man with piercing dark eyes and a neat silver-streaked crew cut—began walking directly toward table four.
Eleanor, however, did not panic. Her posture remained straight, her fingers resting lightly on the gold buttons of her coat, though her breathing was shallow and rapid. She didn't look like a woman caught in a conspiracy; she looked like a general awaiting reinforcements.
"Agent Miller," Julian managed to say, his voice strained and unnaturally high as he forced a weak, trembling smile. "To what do we owe the honor? The restaurant isn't open for lunch service yet, and—"
"Save it, Julian," Agent Miller interrupted, his voice deep, gravelly, and entirely devoid of warmth. He did not even look at the manager, keeping his eyes locked entirely on Eleanor Vance. He stopped three feet from table four, looking down briefly at the dark stain of spilled coffee on the carpet before raising his gaze to the older blonde woman.
"Mrs. Vance," Agent Miller said evenly. "We received an anonymous tip less than ten minutes ago indicating that critical evidence regarding the Vance estate and the missing Union Depository vault key might be located inside this specific dining establishment."
Maya’s breath hitched. She looked from Agent Miller to Eleanor, then back to Julian. The timeline was impossible. The tip had been sent after Eleanor had orchestrated the spilled coffee, but before Julian had pulled the leather pouch from beneath the mahogany table. Someone else in the restaurant had been watching, or Eleanor had coordinated a second backup move before she even walked through the front doors.
Eleanor offered a thin, aristocratic smile, tilting her head slightly. "An anonymous tip, Agent? How dreadfully scandalous. People in this city love to gossip, especially when a prominent man like my late husband meets such a... dramatic end."
"Your husband isn't dead, Mrs. Vance, and you know it as well as we do," Agent Miller shot back smoothly, taking a slow step closer. "The body pulled from the bay yesterday morning dental-matched a transient who had been missing for three weeks. Robert Vance is alive, and we have reason to believe he contacted you within the last forty-eight hours."
Julian gasped softly, his eyes darting wildly between the federal agent and Eleanor. "Alive? But... the press said..."
"The press reports what they are fed," Agent Miller said, finally glancing at Julian with a cold, analytical squint. "And Julian, your financial records from the last forty-eight hours show a sudden, massive wire transfer originating from an offshore account matching Vance's known shell companies. Care to explain how a restaurant manager affords a twenty-thousand-dollar digital deposit on a modest salary?"

Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He looked down at the table, his knees visibly shaking as the walls of his carefully constructed life caved in.
