Chapter 3 - The Digital Archive

The soft glow of Julian’s tablet cast a sharp blue light across his serious face as his fingers danced rapidly over the screen. Around them, the upscale dining room seemed to hold its breath. The nearby diners who had witnessed the crash of the coffee cup now watched the unfolding drama with quiet fascination, their forks suspended halfway to their mouths. Maya stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Julian, her dark eyes fixed on the device, while Eleanor remained trapped by her own sudden desire to flee, her knuckles white where she gripped her chair.
"Let’s see," Julian murmured, tapping the icon for the main dining room's wide-angle security feed. "Camera four, timestamp approximately eight minutes ago. Rewinding to the moment the waitress approached your table."
The screen flickered, resolving into a crisp, high-definition replay of table four. The video showed Maya placing the white coffee cup and saucer down with absolute professional care, speaking politely, and turning away to attend to another station. For a second, the frame was quiet. Then, the footage revealed the damning truth: Eleanor Vance casually, and with deliberate calculation, sliding her index finger against the rim of the empty cup, tipping it over the edge and watching it plunge toward the floor.
Maya exhaled a long, shaky breath she didn't realize she had been holding. "There. See? I told you."
Julian paused the video, the frozen image of Eleanor's deliberate push illuminated clearly on the screen. He turned his gaze slowly from the tablet to the older woman. His expression was no longer merely professional; it was laced with deep disappointment and quiet disbelief.
"Mrs. Vance," Julian said, his voice dangerously even. "The footage is entirely unambiguous. You deliberately knocked the cup off the saucer, blamed an innocent employee, and demanded her termination based on a complete fabrication. May I ask why?"
Eleanor stared at the paused screen, her face draining of what little color it had left. Her pristine blonde bob seemed suddenly heavy, framing features hardened by panic and embarrassment. For a long moment, she said nothing, her chest rising and falling beneath her dark coat in shallow, rapid breaths. The absolute authority she had projected just moments prior had crumbled into dust.
"People in your position," Eleanor finally whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she avoided meeting Julian's piercing gaze, "do not understand what it is like to be entirely invisible until something goes wrong."
"Being invisible does not give you the right to destroy someone else's life," Julian retorted, stepping closer. "Maya is saving for her nursing degree. A false disciplinary mark for gross misconduct would have ruined her record forever. Why would you do something so malicious to a stranger?"

Eleanor bit her lower lip, her eyes darting frantically toward the exit before locking back onto the manager with a sudden, chilling flicker of recognition.
