Chapter 6 - The Ghost of Table Four

The jagged handwriting on the heavy linen paper seemed to burn under the harsh restaurant lighting. Julian stared at the words, his lips parting slightly as the impossible reality sank in. Robert Vance—a prominent city developer whose tragic drowning accident had dominated the front pages of the morning papers—had allegedly written this note after his official time of death.

Maya leaned over Julian’s shoulder, her eyes darting across the lines of ink. "If you are reading this, Eleanor, it means they finally found the drop," the note read. "The key opens the south-side vault at the Union Depository. Everything we built, and everything we were running from, is inside. Do not trust Julian."

Julian froze, the blood draining from his face as his own name stared back at him from the dead man's letter. He slowly dropped the paper onto the table, his eyes darting up to meet Eleanor’s cold, accusatory glare.

"That's absurd," Julian said, his voice rising a fraction before he caught himself and lowered it back to a tense whisper. "I barely knew Robert Vance. I am the manager of a restaurant, not an accomplice to whatever corporate espionage or embezzlement he was mixed up in."

"Are you?" Eleanor challenged, her posture snapping back into rigid defiance. She reached across the table and snatched the brass key from Julian’s hand, slipping it securely into the deep pocket of her dark double-breasted coat. "Robert trusted you with the location of this table because you were his primary contact for his clandestine meetings. You were laundering his shadow accounts through corporate dining tabs for two years."

The surrounding dining room had grown deathly quiet. Even the kitchen staff near the service hatch had stopped moving, sensing the explosive weight of the accusations hanging in the air. Maya looked between the two adults, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had started her shift simply trying to serve coffee; now she was standing in the epicenter of a criminal conspiracy involving a dead man and the restaurant manager.

"You are out of your mind, Mrs. Vance," Julian hissed, standing up slowly from his crouch. He brushed a speck of dust from his sharp black suit, but his hands were visibly shaking. "Your husband was a corrupt thief who ruined hundreds of investors before he drove his car off the coastal highway. I run a legitimate business. If you keep throwing around these defamatory lies, I will call the police right now and have you removed for trespassing and harassment."

"Go ahead," Eleanor invited, tilting her chin up with a terrifyingly calm smile. "Call them. Tell the detectives that the manager of this fine establishment was holding a vault key for a dead felon. Tell them why Robert chose this exact restaurant to hide his final instructions. Let’s see whose secrets unravel faster under oath."

Julian stared at her, the corporate armor he wore cracking under the intense pressure. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Maya stepped back, her hand flying to her mouth as the terrible, jagged truth of the situation finally clicked into place. "The coffee," Maya whispered, her voice shaking. "You didn't just want people to look at the floor... you wanted Julian to find the pouch while everyone was distracted by the fight."
