Chapter 12 - The Return of the Architect

The swinging glass front doors clicked shut behind the newcomer, the sound sharp and crisp in the silent room. Every eye snapped toward the foyer. Standing casually under the warm recessed lighting, holding a sleek black umbrella despite the clear morning sky outside, was Robert Vance.
He didn't look like a man who had drowned in the bay. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, his dark tailored overcoat was immaculate, and a faint, arrogant smirk played across his clean-shaven face. He surveyed the tense scene inside the upscale restaurant as if he were walking into a theater box just before the curtain rose.
"Well, well, well," Robert said, his rich, baritone voice carrying effortlessly across the dining room. He took a slow, measured step forward, tapping the tip of his umbrella lightly against the polished floor. "It seems my dear wife has been keeping everyone quite entertained while I was busy handling our exit strategy."
Julian let out a ragged gasp from his spot on the floor, staring up at the man he thought was dead as if he were seeing a literal ghost. "Robert? But... the police... the body..."
"A convenient administrative error, Julian," Robert said smoothly, not even sparing a glance at the cowering manager. His dark eyes remained locked entirely on Eleanor, who stood completely frozen, the green-lit pocket watch still clutched tightly in her trembling hand. "Did you really think a few forged dentition records and a rented car at the edge of a cliff would keep me from securing what is mine?"
Agent Miller’s hand finally cleared his holster, his weapon instantly leveling at Robert Vance's chest. "Stay right where you are, Vance! Federal custody. You're under arrest for securities fraud, obstruction, and faking your own death."
Robert didn't flinch. He raised his hands slightly, palms forward, maintaining that infuriating, calm smile. "Agent Miller, how predictable. But before you pull that trigger, I suggest you look closely at what my wife is holding in her hand. That antique watch isn't just a dead man's switch for my offshore files—it’s wired directly to the municipal grid control protocols for the entire financial district. If I don't enter the override code within the next ninety seconds, the power grid cuts out, the vaults unlock, and every digital asset in this city wipes clean."
Maya felt the floor practically drop out from under her feet. She looked at Eleanor, whose face had turned entirely pale. The green light on the watch had shifted to a rapid, blinking yellow pulse. "Warning: Override required in sixty seconds," the synthetic voice chimed coldly.
"He's lying," Eleanor hissed, her voice shaking with sudden, overwhelming rage. She glared at her husband across the dining room. "He built the dead man's switch to protect himself from his own associates, not to save the city! He wants the encryption keys so he can transfer the remaining funds and disappear forever!"

"Does it matter, my love?" Robert asked, taking another unhurried step closer, his eyes cold and devoid of any human warmth. "Either way, the game is over. Hand me the watch."
