Chapter 5 - The Hidden Compartment

The atmosphere in the upscale dining room shifted instantly from corporate confrontation to palpable tension. Julian’s hand froze over the tablet, his eyes locking onto Eleanor’s desperate expression. The nearby diners, sensing the dramatic pivot in the conversation, leaned in closer, pretending to study their menus while hanging on every whispered word.
"Your husband?" Julian asked, his voice cautious. "What does your husband have to do with a shattered coffee cup?"
Eleanor looked around the restaurant, her gaze sweeping over the polished mahogany trim, the crystal chandeliers, and finally resting on the heavy velvet drapes near the back exit. Her breathing was shallow, betraying a deep-seated terror that she was trying desperately to mask with bravado.
"He didn't just leave me standing here, Mr. Manager," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "He left a message inside this very room before he vanished three days ago. And the only way I could draw enough attention to this specific table without calling the police—who are entirely compromised—was to cause a scene dramatic enough to make everyone look down."
Maya uncrossed her arms, a cold chill running down her spine. The anger she had felt moments ago was rapidly replaced by uneasy confusion. "Are you saying you planned the whole thing... just to get people to look at the floor near this table?"
"Look at the mahogany base of table four," Eleanor commanded, her voice suddenly sharp and authoritative again. "Look right where the coffee spilled."
Julian didn't hesitate. Bypassing protocol entirely, he knelt down onto the carpet, ignoring the dark stain of spilled dark roast that soaked into the luxury fabric. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the intricate carved wooden pedestal of the table. Near the base, hidden in the deep shadow cast by the tabletop overhang, his fingers brushed against something metallic and unusual—a small, magnetized leather pouch securely stuck to the underside of the mahogany.
"What is this?" Julian muttered, pulling the pouch free from its magnetic anchor.
"Proof," Eleanor said, closing her eyes for a brief second as if bracing for an explosion. "Open it."
Julian carefully unlatched the leather flap, sliding his fingers inside. He pulled out a heavy, vintage brass key with an ornate handle, and a folded piece of thick linen paper covered in hurried, jagged handwriting. He unfolded the note, his eyes scanning the first few lines, and his face instantly drained of all color.
"This handwriting..." Julian breathed, looking up at Eleanor in absolute shock. "This belongs to Robert Vance. But he's..."

"He's dead," Eleanor finished for him, her voice deadpan and chillingly calm. "Or at least, that is what the police report said yesterday morning. But this note proves he was sitting at this exact table less than twenty-four hours after his supposed murder."
