Chapter 4 - The Familiar Shadow

The silence that stretched across the dining room was broken only by the faint hum of the refrigeration units behind the bar. Eleanor Vance pulled her dark coat tighter around herself, as if shielding against a sudden, invisible chill. The smug, untouchable aura she had worn when she walked through the front doors had vanished entirely, replaced by a strange, haunted vulnerability that seemed entirely out of proportion to a mere caught lie.
"You think this was about the coffee?" Eleanor muttered bitterly, her voice dropping to a harsh rasp that only Julian and Maya could hear. She lifted her chin, though her eyes were suspiciously bright. "You think I woke up this morning and decided to ruin a waitress's day for sport?"
Julian frowned, his thumb still resting on the frozen video frame of the tablet. "Regardless of your underlying reasons, Mrs. Vance, your actions were malicious and caused direct harm to an innocent staff member. You owe Maya an immediate apology, and then I must ask you to leave."
"An apology?" Eleanor let out a dry, humorless laugh that sounded more like a cough. "Words mean nothing in a world built entirely on performance. But since you are so keen on uncovering the truth, Mr. Manager, why don't you look a little closer at the rest of that security footage? Not just the last ten minutes. Look at who I was waiting for."
Maya furrowed her brow, glancing at Julian. "What is she talking about?"
Julian’s professional instincts flared once more. He swiped backward on the tablet, expanding the playback window to cover the entire hour leading up to the incident. The fast-forwarded footage showed table four sitting empty, then Eleanor arriving alone, looking around anxiously, and checking her watch repeatedly before Maya ever approached her with the coffee.
"You were sitting here alone for forty minutes before the incident," Julian observed, narrowing his eyes. "You ordered nothing except water, waiting. Who were you supposed to meet?"
"Someone who never showed up," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. She looked directly at Maya, her pale blue eyes suddenly piercing with a strange, dark intensity. "Someone who stood me up, just like I was discarded today. I wanted someone to feel the sting of sudden, unearned ruin, even if it was just a random girl in a black vest."
"That is a deeply disturbed justification for cruelty," Julian said coldly, his patience wearing thin. "Your personal grievances do not excuse terrorizing our staff."
May you like
"You have no idea what kind of man my husband is," Eleanor hissed, leaning across the table with a sudden, desperate urgency, her grip tightening on the pearl buttons of her coat. "And you have no idea what he left behind in this very restaurant."
