Chapter 2 - The Trembling Facade

The mention of security cameras hit Eleanor Vance with the physical force of a sudden blow. Her immaculate composure slipped, leaving a momentary flash of absolute terror in her pale blue eyes. She quickly swallowed, her hand drifting instinctively to her throat to clutch her pearl earrings, but the damage to her practiced armor was already done. Julian noticed the micro-expression, his professional radar instantly locking onto the sudden shift in atmosphere.
"Security cameras?" Julian repeated slowly, glancing between the pale-faced patron and the desperate waitress. He adjusted his tie, his expression hardening just a fraction. "Well, Mrs. Vance, as standard protocol for any disruptive incident involving our staff or guests, we always review the closed-circuit footage to ensure absolute fairness. If Maya is mistaken, we will handle it accordingly. If she is correct, we must protect our employees."
Eleanor’s hand dropped heavily to the table. The smug satisfaction that had radiated from her just moments before evaporated completely. "There is no need to involve technology in a simple customer service dispute," Eleanor said, her voice losing its previous authoritative edge and dropping into a tense, defensive register. "It is completely unnecessary. Surely an upscale establishment like this does not subject its valued patrons to intrusive surveillance reviews over a dropped dish. It is a matter of my word against hers, and as a platinum-tier regular, my word should carry weight."
"Every guest matters here, Mrs. Vance, but so does the livelihood of our team," Julian replied calmly, standing his ground. He turned toward the ceiling corner where the small, dark dome of the security camera hummed quietly. "Besides, the lens has a direct, unobstructed view of table four. It will take less than two minutes to pull up the feed on my tablet."
Maya crossed her arms over her black vest, feeling a surge of cautious vindication. "Please do, Julian. Let the camera show exactly who pushed what. Let’s see if Mrs. Vance is still so eager to have me fired once the truth plays out on the screen."
Eleanor’s jaw tightened. The refined elegance she wore like a second skin felt suddenly suffocating. She stood up from her chair, her dark double-coated fabric swishing sharply as she squared her shoulders, desperately trying to reclaim her lost ground. "This is entirely absurd. I have somewhere very important to be. I will not stand here and be treated like a common liar over a shattered piece of ceramic. If this is how you treat loyal patrons, you won't have to worry about me ever stepping foot in this mediocre establishment again."
"Please wait just a moment, Mrs. Vance," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an undeniable weight of authority that stopped her in her tracks. "If you leave now without letting us verify the facts, it casts an unfair shadow over Maya. And quite frankly, your sudden reluctance to check the footage is raising serious questions."

Eleanor froze, one hand gripping the back of her chair as the restaurant manager pulled a sleek tablet from his jacket pocket.
