Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

The cold rain continued to lash against the reinforced glass of the basement holding cells beneath Blackwood Manor. Arthur was shoved violently onto a hard wooden bench, his tailored navy suit wrinkled and stained with dust from the study floor. The heavy steel door slammed shut behind the two tactical guards, the electronic deadbolt engaging with a final, echoing thud.

He was trapped inside his own ancestral home.

Arthur rubbed his bruised shoulder, his mind racing through options. Elena had effectively neutralized his legal standing, seized control of the board through Marcus, and locked him away where no one from the outside world could reach him. He thought of six-year-old Leo and his older brother Thomas upstairs, sleeping under the thumb of a woman who viewed them merely as chess pieces in her grand design.

A metallic scraping sound at the heavy door made Arthur look up. The small sliding mail slot at eye level popped open, and a pair of familiar, tear-filled brown eyes peered through the darkness.

“Mr. Hall?” a soft, trembling voice whispered from the corridor.

Arthur scrambled off the bench, pressing his face against the iron bars of the slot.

“Maya?” Arthur whispered back, stunned. “I thought Elena had you locked up in the county jail!”

“She did, until an hour ago,” Maya whispered back quickly, glancing fearfully over her shoulder into the dim hallway. “Mr. Vance posted my bail, but he brought me straight back here under the cover of the shift change. Mrs. Hall wanted me back in the mansion. She said if I didn't play along with the theft narrative, she would make sure my mother’s medical care was permanently cut off.”

Arthur felt a wave of hot fury rise in his chest. Elena was systematically breaking everyone around her, using extortion and fear to maintain her absolute illusion of innocence.

“Maya, listen to me very carefully,” Arthur said, his voice urgent and intense as he gripped the iron bars. “You have to find a way to get to Leo. He knows where the physical hard copies of the offshore ledger are hidden. They aren't just in the study safe; there is a backup flash drive taped to the underside of the grand piano in the music room.”

Maya gasped, pulling back slightly from the slot.

“The music room? Mr. Hall, the security cameras in the west wing are monitored twenty-four hours a day now. I’ll never make it across the foyer without setting off the silent alarm.”

“You have to try,” Arthur insisted, pressing his forehead against the cold metal bars. “It’s our only chance to expose what she’s doing before she strips the company completely dry and flees the country.”

Before Maya could respond, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor. A shadow fell across the slot, and Marcus Vance’s sleek, tailored face appeared in the opening, a cynical smirk playing on his lips.
