Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The mahogany boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Hall Enterprises overlooked a slate-gray Manhattan skyline. Heavy rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside the room. Arthur sat at the head of the long conference table, his navy suit immaculate, though his eyes were bloodshot from a sleepless night. Flanking him sat Marcus, looking distinctly uncomfortable, while Elena occupied the seat directly across from her husband, wearing a sharp white power suit that mirrored the blazer from the night before.

“This is an unprecedented disaster,” board member Harrison whispered loudly, tapping a gold-plated pen against the polished wood. “The police report regarding the stolen heirlooms has leaked to the financial press. Our stock dropped four points at opening bell.”

Elena leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, projecting an aura of composed leadership that commanded the room.

“Thank you, Harrison,” Elena said, her voice smooth and devoid of any domestic warmth. “As your CEO and primary shareholder, I share your deep concern. Unfortunately, my husband’s recent erratic behavior—including publicly bailing out the thieving domestic employee—has severely compromised the company’s public image.”

Arthur slammed his palm against the table, the sharp crack silencing the murmurs of the board.

“Stop playing the grieving, loyal corporate savior, Elena,” Arthur growled, standing up to loom over the table. “You orchestrated the theft. You planted the diamonds in Maya’s caddy to cover up a much larger financial discrepancy in the estate accounts, and you know it.”

A collective gasp echoed around the room. Marcus buried his face in his hands, muttering something about professional suicide under his breath. Elena, however, didn’t flinch. She simply tilted her head, a cold, predatory smile touching her lips.

“Look at him, gentlemen,” Elena said, addressing the board with theatrical sadness. “The stress of the audit has clearly caused a psychotic break. He is hallucinating criminal plots involving his own family.”

Elena reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder, sliding it across the polished mahogany toward Arthur.

“Effective immediately, under clause fourteen of our corporate charter in the event of documented mental instability, the board is enacting a temporary suspension of Arthur Hall’s voting rights and executive duties,” Elena declared, her voice ringing with absolute authority.

Arthur stared at the document, his eyes scanning the signatures already inked at the bottom. To his utter horror, Marcus’s signature was right there beside Elena’s.

“Marcus?” Arthur whispered, looking at his lawyer with raw betrayal. “You signed this?”

Marcus refused to meet Arthur’s eyes, clearing his throat nervously as he adjusted his tie.

“I represent the firm, Arthur,” Marcus muttered quietly. “And right now, the firm is surviving. Elena already bought out your debt.”
