Chapter 12 - The Blackmail Package

The cold dampness of the coal cellar bit straight through Maya’s thin maid uniform as she huddled in the corner of the concrete room. Across the narrow stone corridor, Arthur stood pressed against the iron bars of his cell, his dark eyes filled with fierce determination despite the grim circumstances.
“Are you alright, Maya?” Arthur asked softly, his voice echoing in the underground vault.
“I’m okay, Mr. Hall,” Maya whispered back, shivering slightly. “They searched me, but… they missed it.”
Arthur’s eyes widened. He stepped closer to the bars.
“Missed what?”
Maya slowly raised her trembling hand, opening her palm to reveal a small, battered USB flash drive that she had managed to wedge inside the hem of her apron pocket before the guards hauled her out of the shaft.
“When I was in the dumbwaiter… I didn't just see the brick wall,” Maya whispered, a faint note of triumph in her voice. “There was a loose metal box resting on the ledge just below the kitchen level. It had your father’s personal seal stamped on the wax. I grabbed it right before they shone the flashlight down.”
Arthur stared at the flash drive in disbelief. It was the physical backup of the family trust—the one piece of evidence Marcus and Elena didn't even know existed.
Before Arthur could reply, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone stairs leading into the sub-basement. The electronic deadbolt on the cellar door clicked open, and Marcus Vance strode into the room, accompanied by two armed security guards. Marcus looked distinctly flustered, his expensive suit jacket unbuttoned and his tie slightly askew—a rare crack in his usual polished armor.
“Alright, playtime is over,” Marcus snapped, his voice sharp with panic. “The state tax investigator just slapped a federal freeze on every single account we control. The board is in an absolute uproar.”
Arthur stepped to the front of his cell, a cold, confident smile spreading across his face for the first time in days.
“Sounds like your house of cards is finally collapsing, Marcus,” Arthur said smoothly. “How does it feel to know that all your corporate cunning is about to end in a federal penitentiary?”
Marcus glared at Arthur, his face flushing crimson with suppressed rage. He stepped right up to the cell bars, pointing a trembling finger at Arthur’s chest.
“You think you’ve won?” Marcus hissed, pulling a thick manila envelope from his coat pocket and holding it up. “Elena just had the local authorities pick up your two sons from their private tutoring center. Right now, little Leo and Thomas are sitting in the back of a squad car headed for a secure state foster facility—unless you sign the total asset forfeiture agreement within the next ten minutes.”

Arthur’s blood ran cold. The color drained entirely from his face as the crushing reality of the threat hit him like a physical blow.
