Chapter 3 - The Empty Vault

The damp chill of the precinct holding area clung to Arthur’s skin as he waited for Maya to be brought out. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a sickly yellow hue over the concrete block walls. When the heavy metal door finally clanked open, Maya stepped through, her wrists free of the handcuffs, but her spirit visibly bruised. She looked smaller in her faded maid uniform, her eyes cast downward in defeat.

“Mr. Hall,” Maya murmured, stopping a few feet away. “You shouldn’t have come. Mrs. Hall… she won't like this.”

“Elena doesn’t dictate who I believe, Maya,” Arthur said firmly, stepping forward and handing her a hot cup of coffee from the station vending machine. “I spoke with Leo. He told me what he saw.”

Maya’s head snapped up, tears welling in her eyes once more. A mixture of hope and fear washed over her features.

“He… he told you?” Maya whispered, glancing nervously around the drab room. “Thank God. I didn't want to bring him into this, Mr. Hall. He was in the master hallway on Tuesday night. He saw Mrs. Hall open the safe behind the oil painting. She took the velvet box out herself and shoved it into the bottom of my cleaning bucket while I was downstairs fetching fresh linens.”

Arthur felt the ground drop out from under him. The safe required a six-digit biometric code that only he and Elena possessed. He had never shared the combination with anyone.

“Why would she frame you, Maya?” Arthur asked, running a hand through his dark, well-groomed hair in frustration. “What could she possibly gain?”

Before Maya could answer, the heavy metal door slammed open again. Marcus Vance, Arthur’s longtime corporate lawyer and personal friend, strode into the room, his face flushed and his expensive trench coat flapping behind him.

“Arthur, have you lost your absolute mind?” Marcus barked, ignoring Maya completely. “Posting bail for the accused thief? The board of directors is already calling my office. Elena called an emergency executive meeting for tomorrow morning.”

Arthur turned to face his lawyer, his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ached. He didn't care about the board; he cared about the rot eating away at the foundation of his life.

“Marcus, Elena framed her,” Arthur said flatly, pointing a finger at Maya. “Leo witnessed it. The security system in the east wing was wiped clean.”

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at Arthur for a long, uncomfortable moment, his eyes darting briefly toward Maya before returning to his client. A strange, unreadable shadow passed over Marcus’s face—a flicker of panic that he masked with a practiced sigh of annoyance.

“Arthur, listen to yourself,” Marcus said, lowering his voice and stepping closer. “You’re talking about a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scandal. If you pursue this ridiculous conspiracy against your wife, the board won’t just oust you from the company—Elena will file for divorce and take the boys. And she already has the keys to the estate.”
