Chapter 10 - The Dumbwaiter Secret

The service kitchen of Blackwood Manor was dead quiet, save for the rhythmic dripping of a leaky faucet into the stainless-steel sink. Maya crept across the checkered linoleum floor, her soft-soled shoes making no sound. She kept her eyes fixed on the narrow, dark opening of the old dumbwaiter shaft tucked away in the corner pantry, half-hidden behind a stack of industrial baking trays.
Upstairs, the muffled sound of Investigator Harris’s voice echoed down through the ventilation grates. He was demanding explanations for the empty wall safe, his tone growing increasingly stern as Elena spun her web of fabricated betrayal.
Maya reached the wooden hatch of the dumbwaiter, her fingers trembling as she slid the brass latch. The mechanism was old and rusted, but with a gentle, calculated push, the heavy door swung inward with a faint, groaning squeak. Inside the dark vertical shaft hung a frayed hemp rope attached to a wooden cargo box thick with decades of dust and soot.
She pulled a small penlight from her apron pocket, clicking it on. The narrow beam of light cut through the floating dust motes, revealing the rusted iron counterweights and the bricked-over wall of the original sub-basement three floors down.
“Come on, Maya, just focus,” she whispered to herself, grabbing the frayed rope and lowering her weight carefully onto the wooden ledge of the cargo box.
She squeezed her small frame into the cramped wooden box, pulling her knees tight against her chest. With her right hand, she gripped the rough hemp rope, slowly feeding it through her palm as gravity pulled her downward into the chilling dark of the sub-basement.
The descent felt agonizingly slow. The air grew colder and heavier with every foot she dropped, smelling of damp earth and aged oak. Below her, the shaft opened up into a pitch-black void.
Suddenly, the kitchen door above her swung open with a sharp click.
“Check the service corridors,” Marcus Vance’s cold voice barked from the kitchen floor. “Arthur claims there’s a sub-basement access down here. Elena wants every inch of this wing searched immediately.”
Maya’s breath hitched in her throat. She froze mid-descent, clinging desperately to the hemp rope as heavy footsteps marched across the linoleum tiles directly above the dumbwaiter shaft.
“Hey! Look at this hatch,” one of the security guards shouted, his voice echoing loudly up the shaft. “It’s unlatched!”
Maya looked down into the black abyss beneath her feet, then up toward the opening where a flashlight beam suddenly pierced the darkness, illuminating the drifting dust motes just inches above her head.

“Well, well, well,” Marcus’s voice echoed down the shaft, cold and dripping with malicious satisfaction. “Look what the rat dragged out of the hole.”
