Chapter 7 - The Maid’s True Identity

Julian froze on the threshold of his own study, his hand hovering over the door handle. The warm desk lamp illuminated the small, compact room, casting long shadows across the walls lined with leather-bound law and finance books. Clara stood beside the mahogany desk, holding the thick, leather-bound ledger that Evelyn had claimed was locked away. The bruise on Clara’s cheek was still visible, but the terrified, trembling maid who had knelt on the foyer floor just minutes ago was completely gone.
In her place stood a woman with an upright, military posture, her eyes sharp, analytical, and utterly fearless as she met Julian’s stunned gaze.
"You’re not a maid," Julian said slowly, his voice barely above a whisper. He kept the matte-black firearm lowered at his side, though his instincts screamed at him to raise it. "Who the hell are you?"
Clara gently closed the ledger, setting it down on the blotter with a soft thud. She reached up with her right hand and peeled off the remarkably convincing latex prosthetic that had formed the swollen bruise and cut along her cheekbone. Underneath was unblemished skin and a cold, professional smile.
"Agent Clara Vance, Federal Financial Crimes Division," she replied, her voice crisp, articulate, and completely devoid of the timid accent she had maintained all afternoon. "And for the record, Mr. Sterling, your security protocols are an absolute joke. It took my team three weeks to infiltrate your household staff."
Julian’s mind reeled. Another Vance. The federal director of internal financial crimes wasn't just a distant colleague; he was obviously related to this undercover operative.
"You lied to me," Julian said, his chest tightening with a profound sense of betrayal that seemed to have no end. "My son—was Leo even in danger? Was that whole scene in the foyer staged?"
"Leo was never in physical danger from Mrs. Sterling during that specific incident, though her psychological abuse of the child over the past six months is thoroughly documented on our hidden audio feeds," Clara stated calmly, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of Julian. "We needed a catalyst to force your hand, Mr. Sterling. You refused to cooperate with our federal probe into your wife’s family because you wanted to handle your domestic affairs privately. We had to create a situation where you had no choice but to see the rot for yourself."
Julian took a slow step into the study, the heavy firearm feeling increasingly useless in his grip. He set it down on a side table, running a hand through his hair in utter disbelief.
"You used my son as bait in a federal sting operation?" Julian demanded, his voice rising with suppressed fury. "You risked an infant's safety for a tactical advantage?"
"Leo was protected by three armed federal agents positioned in the perimeter vents within twenty feet of the foyer at all times," Clara replied, her tone unwavering, though a flicker of genuine empathy crossed her eyes. "We knew Evelyn was planning to execute the Vanguard transfer today. If we hadn't stepped in, your entire estate, your company, and your personal freedom would have been systematically dismantled by midnight, and you would have been indicted as an accessory to your brother-in-law’s money laundering scheme."
Before Julian could process the crushing weight of her words, a heavy crash echoed from the hallway outside the study.
The sound of shattering glass and a muffled, frantic scream pierced the quiet of the estate. Julian and Clara spun around toward the open doorway just as the lights in the study flickered violently and died, plunging the room into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

From the hallway, a harsh, mechanical click echoed through the gloom—the distinct sound of a thermal breaching charge detonating against the heavy oak study door.
