Chapter 2 - The Digital Alibi

The vibration of the smartphone against Julian’s tailored suit pocket felt like a physical blow. He pulled his device out, his gaze never leaving Evelyn’s starkly pale face. The screen flashed a notification from the internal network linking every camera across the vast estate. Evelyn’s breath hitched audibly, her fingers twitching at her side as she watched Julian’s thumb hover over the unlock button. The grand foyer seemed to shrink, the black-and-white marble tiles pressing in like a closing trap.

"Julian, please," Evelyn whispered, her voice losing its defensive edge, slipping into a fragile, pleading cadence. "You know how stressed I’ve been since the postpartum depression diagnosis. The doctors said my mind plays tricks on me. Don't look at that footage; it won't show what you think it shows. It's out of context."

Julian ignored her, his jaw tightening until the muscle feathered. He punched in his passcode, his eyes scanning the thumbnail of the nursery camera feed from precisely forty minutes prior. The timestamp glowed in bright red numbers: 3:14 PM. Right in the middle of his board meeting downtown.

"You told me you were resting," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You told me you spent the afternoon meditating while Clara handled the nursery."

"I was confused!" Evelyn stammered, stepping closer, though Julian raised a hand to halt her advance. "The medication—the new prescription—it makes me paranoid. I love our son more than my own life. You know I do!"

Clara remained kneeling on the cold floor, pulling the white baby blanket slightly closer to protect the infant, who stirred and let out a soft, plaintive whimper. The sound seemed to break Julian’s trance. He bypassed the thumbnail and tapped the play icon, casting the video onto the smart-display mounted across the foyer wall.

The high-definition footage flickered to life with agonizing clarity. The empty nursery appeared on screen, bathed in the soft afternoon sunlight streaming through the lace curtains. A second later, Evelyn strolled into the frame, her face twisted in a cold, unrecognizable scowl that bore no resemblance to the loving mother she projected to society.

On the screen, Evelyn marched directly toward the wooden crib where baby Leo was resting. Without a word, she reached down, gripped the infant’s tiny arm with vicious force, and shook him roughly. The audio captured a sharp, breathless shriek from the baby, followed by Evelyn’s harsh, muffled hiss: "Shut your filthy mouth before I give you a real reason to cry."

Julian stopped breathing. The phone slipped slightly in his grip, the gold watch catching the ambient light as his hand trembled. He slowly turned his head to look at Evelyn, his expression entirely devoid of human warmth.

"You lied to my face," Julian whispered, taking a menacing step toward his wife. "You abused my son."

Evelyn backed away until her spine hit the mahogany door frame, her eyes wide with sudden, desperate malice as she realized her facade was completely shattered.

"You think you know everything, Julian," Evelyn sneered, her voice dropping all pretense of sweetness as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a heavy brass key. "Try locking me out. Go ahead. But before you do, check what’s hidden in the master safe."
