Chapter 5 - The Silver Drop

The silver flash drive bounced lightly against the stone portico steps, coming to a rest just inches from Julian’s polished leather shoes. The red LED light on the tiny device blinked in a slow, hypnotic rhythm, mocking the heavy thud of Julian’s heartbeat. Marcus stood near the edge of the driveway, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his tailored designer overcoat, radiating an unbearable arrogance.

"You think a flash drive changes reality, Marcus?" Julian shouted, keeping the black firearm lowered but fully ready, his finger resting lightly beside the trigger. "You embezzled from a federal entity. Every transfer leaves a cryptographic fingerprint. The FBI will have your assets frozen before midnight."

Marcus let out a low, amused chuckle, shaking his head as he stepped further into the glare of the security floodlights.

"Federal entity? Julian, wake up," Marcus replied, his voice dripping with condescension. "Who do you think authorized the corporate restructuring in the first place? Evelyn and I didn't steal your money; we legally acquired it through a court-approved corporate dissolution order signed by Judge Harrison this morning."

Julian’s breath hitched. Judge Harrison—a man he had known and dined with for over a decade. The corruption ran infinitely deeper than he had ever imagined, a sprawling web of collusion that reached the highest tiers of the local judiciary.

"Harrison is my friend," Julian growled, though a cold seed of dread was beginning to sprout in his stomach.

"Harrison is a businessman, Julian, just like the rest of us," Marcus said smoothly, taking another step up the driveway. "And he prefers backing winners. You were too stubborn, too ethical to play the long game. You refused the Asian semiconductor contracts because of minor environmental regulations. You were choking the company to death."

Julian tightened his grip on the firearm, his knuckles aching. "So you decided to murder my marriage and gut my corporation behind my back?"

"We saved it," Evelyn’s voice chimed in softly as she stepped out through the open front doors behind Julian, her posture rigid and triumphant once more. "And as for your marriage, Julian? It was over the moment you started prioritizing balance sheets over your own wife."

Before Julian could respond, the deep, rumbling roar of heavy diesel engines echoed from the end of the long driveway. Two unmarked black SUVs tore through the open security gates, their high beams blindingly bright as they hurtled up the gravel path, spraying stones in all directions. The vehicles slammed to a halt, boxing in Marcus’s sedan and effectively sealing off the estate.

Marcus’s confident smirk vanished instantly. He stopped walking, his eyes darting toward the newly arrived SUVs as the driver-side doors swung open simultaneously.

Two heavily armed men in tactical gear stepped out, their faces obscured by black balaclavas, holding specialized long-range communication devices.

"Mr. Sterling," one of the tactical officers called out, his voice sharp and authoritative over the engine idle. "We have secured the perimeter. Director Vance is en route, but we intercepted an outbound transmission from your wife’s personal tablet."

Julian turned slightly, keeping his gun trained on Marcus while eyeing the tactical officer. "What kind of transmission?"

The officer tapped his wrist-mounted terminal, projecting a holographic data stream into the cold night air between them.

"An encrypted wire transfer instruction," the officer stated grimly. "Destination: a Swiss bank account under the name of a phantom corporation. Amount: one hundred million dollars. And the primary signature... it wasn't yours, Mr. Sterling. It was your wife's brother—the district attorney."
