Chapter 4 - The Gates of Ruin

Julian tracked Evelyn’s pointing finger through the tall, arched glass panels flanking the double front doors. Down the long, winding gravel drive of the estate, a sleek black sedan had just pulled up directly in front of the ornate wrought-iron security gates. The headlights cut through the gathering twilight, casting long, skeletal shadows across the manicured lawns. Even from a distance, Julian recognized the vehicle instantly. It belonged to Marcus, his loyal CFO and brother-in-arms for over twenty years.
"Marcus," Julian breathed, the realization hitting him like a physical blow to the chest. "He’s here."
"Of course he’s here," Evelyn laughed softly, straightening the cream fabric of her dress with chilling nonchalance. "How else do you think I managed to bypass the secondary firewalls? You were too busy playing corporate savior to notice your own empire was being carved up from the inside out."
Julian let go of her wrist, stepping back as if burned by her toxic presence. He looked from his treacherous wife to Clara, who stood holding baby Leo near the safety of the parlor entrance. The contrast between the innocent child, the bruised and loyal maid, and the cold-blooded conspirator standing by the door crystallized his reality. He had spent his entire life building an impenetrable fortress of wealth and status, only to leave the backdoor wide open to the wolves he called family and friends.
"Clara," Julian said, his voice hard as iron. "Take Leo to the panic room behind the library. Lock the steel door and do not open it for anyone except me—do you understand? Anyone."
Clara nodded firmly, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and determination. "Yes, Mr. Sterling. I won't let anything happen to him."
As Clara hurried down the dim hallway toward the sanctuary of the library, Julian turned his attention back to Evelyn. He walked over to the antique mahogany console table, opened a hidden velvet-lined drawer, and pulled out a heavy, matte-black firearm. The metallic click of the safety disengaging echoed sharply in the silent foyer.
Evelyn’s smug smile faltered instantly. She took a nervous step back, her hands rising defensively.
"Julian... you wouldn't," she stammered, the color entirely draining from her face. "I'm your wife. We share a life."
"We shared a lie," Julian corrected, pointing the weapon toward the floor near her feet as he walked past her toward the heavy double doors. "Stay right there. If you take one step toward my son, or toward that exit, I won't hesitate to end this right here."
Julian pulled open the front doors, stepping out onto the grand stone portico as the crisp evening wind whipped his suit jacket around him. Down the drive, the black sedan’s passenger door swung open, and Marcus stepped out into the floodlights, holding a thick manila folder in his hand.
Marcus took two casual steps forward, flashing a familiar, easygoing grin that now looked entirely demonic under the harsh white lights.

"Evening, Julian," Marcus called out smoothly, tossing a silver flash drive onto the stone steps at Julian’s feet. "I think you’ll find we’ve already won."
